Olderisbetter Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I'm having trouble gluing tires to rims when not using original wheelbacks that do NOT match to the rim properly. What kind of glue do you guys use for that? Thanks.
Snake45 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I almost never glue these, but when I do, I'll try Tacky Glue first, and if that doesn't work, superglue (as little as possible).
gtx6970 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I don't. I don't even glue the 2 pieces tires together
Snake45 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I've also cheated when the rim is just a little smaller than the tire opening and wrapped the perimeter with a thin cut strip of masking tape to build up the diameter.I can imagine cases where double-sided Scotch tape would be of use, too. I keep a roll of the stuff on hand and every once in a while, it is EXACTLY the cure for some weird problem.
Olderisbetter Posted April 5, 2017 Author Posted April 5, 2017 When I glue them or don't glue them they seem fine at first, but then after a few hours the tire peels off from the rim. Often this is when no backing plate is used at all.Like when a tire is mounted to a body as a spare like on a Jeep. I'll try the thick super glue again.
62rebel Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Tire compounds react badly to some glues, and cyanoacrylate fogs chrome (and everything around it sometimes) too much; if I HAVE to glue them I use carpenter's glue, it's thick as molasses and dries quickly enough. I have two kits that have two piece tires, both from the dark days of the mid-to-late 70's and I left them in the kit out of nostalgia. Any others get relegated to the "weird old junk" box.
shucky Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I use Devcon 2 part epoxy for almost everything. No fogging or reactions to different surfaces and it stays where you put it. Your model will be super strong afterwards also lol.
talon63 Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 I don't. I don't even glue the 2 pieces tires togetherGlad I'm not only one. As far attaching tires to rims, seldom do I do. Sometimes it's nice to refresh something in the display with a new set of rims or tires, if they are an improvement over what it got built with originally. Some of my Under Glass stuff will be perpetually WIP.
62rebel Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Most of my builds never get final gluing because they might have to endure another round of changes like that! A better set of wheels and tires often pops up after I've "finished" a kit
