for my dad's birthday in a few weeks I'm building him a Revell 1966 gt350h as its his faviorate mustang. I'm just wondering what the easiest way is to get all of the decals specifically the hood stripes to turn out looking there best. I know he'll look past any imperfections of any kind but I really want it to look good.

You might get away with painting the scoop and decals for the rest with a lot of Microsol.  I rarely see decals though due to the problem you described, most people just mask the lines and paint them.

First of all put some soapy water down where the decal will go, it makes it easier to move around. When it is in the exact position you want use a wide soft brush do brush it down and get rid of bubbles. Then press the decal down with a hot damp cloth, it will conform and lay down instantly without the wrinkles you get from solvents. A hair dryer on a low setting will help also but keep it moving around.

Another method to consider. I use abroad soft paint brush as this allows you to move around the decal as needed and is easier the straighten a decal if it folds over. Solvaset makes a couple of great products, you might try putting just a dab of water or solutions on the body before applying the decal. Also the brush can be easier to work out bubbles and aid the decal to settle down over body contours. When the decal is positioned were you want it you can use a small piece of paper towel to draw off any excess fluids.  If you have any old decals that you don't plan to use just experiment on a plastic spoon and see what works best for you. If you don't already you should have picnic spoons handy anytime you want to try something new or different.
