Harold Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 I'm a big fan of the comics page, and five years ago (when the only paper in this neck of the woods that carried it was the Detroit Free Press) I discovered 'Pearls Before Swine'. Rat and Pig were on the curb and Rat says, "I'm going to a wake", Pig asks, "Who are you going to awake?" Rat (glowering): "My cousin died". Pig: "That won't be easy". I have all the books (the only other collections I own are The Far Side series), and whenever I need a pick-me-up, I just read a couple pages worth of strips. Rat is a wannabe Ernest Hemingway who occasionally writes about 'The Adventures of Angry Bob', who almost always manages to die, and he created Danny Donkey, a children's book character who drinks beer and breaks into stores to steal cigarettes. Yesterday's strip was plain nuts- Pastis is not above some really bad puns, and this one was hysterical. If you've never seen it, check it out sometime.
george 53 Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Harold, "Pearls " is one of my favorite cartoons too! Steven Pastis must be a real nut to come up with the stuff he does. Did you catch this Sundays Free Press comics?A real "pearl"!
samdiego Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I too, enjoy a good Pearls. I've always been a huge fan of the comics pages. I still see the wisdom in Peanuts and surprisingly remember most of them from the first time around. Pogo was great. Andy Capp was great. But my absolute favorite is Calvin and Hobbes.
george 53 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I get my Free Press in the mornin, take out my comics an give the rest to my wife to take to work.As far as I'm concerned,It's the only part worth reading.World news is just too depressing.
Guest zebm1 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 My Favorite waz Andy Capp's "Lil' Abner" and his social commentary.
samdiego Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 gotcha with a jedi mind trick! it's Al Capp. Another brilliant strip
rollover Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I LOVE it when Pastis makes fun of himself and draws him in the strip!
abedooley Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I love GET FUZZY.. My favorite strip was from about 4 or so years ago, they were wondering why everyone who's on "COPS" never has a shirt on.. It was funny because a few days before I had just noticed the same thing.. Anyone been on "COPS" before??
Nick F40 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) I love Get Fuzzy too, I love Bucky. I also like Mutts and love Calvin and Hobbes. I still like Garfield but I was huge as I was a young lad. Pearls is just awsome! Edited June 17, 2008 by Nick F40

Pearls is just awsome! I love all them comics too! Calvin & Hobbes was so cool and it took some time to get use to Get Fuzzy but now I love it! Dog standing up with his belly dragging on the floor...
rickr442 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I love GET FUZZY.. My favorite strip was from about 4 or so years ago, they were wondering why everyone who's on "COPS" never has a shirt on.. It was funny because a few days before I had just noticed the same thing.. Anyone been on "COPS" before?? Not Cops, Abe, but I worked on a 'car-crew' for an America's Most Wanted episode filmed one Friday night in Van Nuys a few years ago. We recreated a jail escape/carjacking/chase with actors and cheap movie cars. Rough area, lots of police protection for John Walsh but while we were there there was a drive-by shooting a block away, and one off-duty cops' pickup was stolen. Tough duty! And Abe,,, You can't BE on Cops at all if 1. You have all your teeth... 2. your clothes fit... 3. you KNOW what's under the front seat of your car... 4. You know WHOSE car you're driving... 5. You know where your other shoe is... 6. You don't have $127,000 in warrants... 7. your IQ is more than 1/4 your weight!
Harold Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 I LOVE it when Pastis makes fun of himself and draws him in the strip! There was one about four years ago where it was supposedly drawn by his neighbor, 'Nunzio J. Penagatti' where he and Pastis went to the bookstore so Pastis could sign a bunch of books. When Nunzio mentioned they didn't even ask for Pastis' ID, he replied they never do. Nunzio:"The next day I returned to the bookstore and walked right up to the sales counter. 'Gimme a pen', I sez- I'm John %$#&^*( Grisham". An absolute classic.

Did ya get paid?? And Abe,,, You can't BE on Cops at all if 1. You have all your teeth... 2. your clothes fit... 3. you KNOW what's under the front seat of your car... 4. I'm gonna have to use that one, if ya dont mind.

Harold Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 Some of my other favorite comics are 'Herman' (Jim Unger is a Larson-class cartoonist), 'Mutts'. 'Fusco Brothers', 'Dilbert' (we've all worked at dysfunctional outfits like that one), 'Get Fuzzy' and 'Bloom County'. I'm sure I've omitted several, but this is off the top o'my head.
bob29579 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I love Calvin and Hobbes. I quit buying the paper when he stopped the strip and I have every book he ever put out...
