Hi,

My last experience with decals and flat paint was not so favorable.

I noticed slight water stains and was hoping that the community could shed some light on how to successfully apply decals to a flat top coat?

Thanks in advance.

This has always been a problem.

Even the model train guys in the 1950s would spray a coat of something glossy before applying decals, and a flat-clear, when it became available, over the whole mess.

Yup. That's been SOP in Model Airplane World since at least the '70s. Micro-Scale even turned it into a marketable "system" and made a fortune off the products.

Glosscoat. Decal. Set (soften or dissolve) decals. Regloss if deemed necessary. THEN, flatcoat over the whole mess. Done right, it looks magnificent.

Take a Q-Tip and wet the underside of the decal with Future. It gets rid of the silvering that makes the decal surround clear. I have to do this wit racecar seats that have driver names and manufacturer name decals. This works well with tire decals too. Cleanup excess Future with ammonia.
