fiatboy Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 I've been using this tape (I'm almost out) by 'Kamoi'. It seems like good tape: it is yellow like Tamiya and I thought it was! I went online and I can get it in Japan, but that seems expensive. Anybody know a good place to get this tape, or similar? Thanks
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 (edited) 3M has a high quality 1.5" yellow masking tape made for real car body and paint work. Any body-shop supply store can fix you up with a roll. It's probably not as thin as the Kamoi, but it's worth looking at, especially because you're most likely not going to be trying to get very fine edges from a 1.5" wide tape. It's available from Amazon and other online retailers too. Here's 3.6 cm. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036C0PVI/ref=psdc_228921_t2_B00BZ0KFPY Edited October 31, 2017 by Ace-Garageguy
fiatboy Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Hi Ace. Thanks for the response. Since this is automotive grade tape, I wonder if it would be too harsh for model paint. You know, pulling up hobby paints underneath.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Hi Ace. Thanks for the response. Since this is automotive grade tape, I wonder if it would be too harsh for model paint. You know, pulling up hobby paints underneath. That I can't tell you. I do know it's a little less aggressive in the adhesive department than the 3M green tape I swear by.Because both the yellow and the green are intended for real-car use, they're designed to be solvent-resistant, and don't allow it to soak through to whatever is under it. See the caution about blue tape below. But I always AVOID having any tape of ANY kind in contact with painted surfaces if at all possible, and only allow fine-line tape from 3M or Tamiya to touch paint.I also usually use real automotive paints like Duplicolor, and do very careful surface prep to insure maximum adhesion. I also rarely two-tone anything, but I'm sure somebody here has used the stuff for that too.A word of caution about blue tape: though it's designed to be the least aggressive to finishes, it's also intended primarily for water-based paints. Solvents can actually soak through it and literally glue it to the surface of a model...particularly if you use the el-cheapo Chinese no-name stuff.
fiatboy Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Thanks Ace. Presently, I am 'gun shy' of laquers, although I have never used Duplicolor. I bought some paint from the local NAPA 'paint mixer guy' to match some Mopar paint. He got the color wrong but I used it anyway. He said all the manufacturers use (some type of) enamel. Anyway, was that paint delightful to use thru my AB!!
fiatboy Posted November 4, 2017 Author Posted November 4, 2017 I found the Tamiya masking tape, 4 cm wide: "Cornwall Model Boats" in the UK.
dlh Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 Maybe I don't understand. I have several rolls of this tape:https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-87063-Masking-Tape-40mm/dp/B000BN9R1Y/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1509808108&sr=8-5&keywords=tamiya+masking+tapeI have used it successfully many times.Dave
