My '68 Nova is Ash Gold and it had grey primer from the factory.

Is it a light, medium or dark gray primer?

It has been 20 years since I striped the paint off, but I believe it was medium to dark grey. I have one of original fenders from the '68 on my '69 Nova, but it is currently under 4 feet of snow.

Medium to dark gray sounds about right for a Chevy.  I never saw light gray primer on a Chevy.  That's usually a Chrysler color.

Actually, my '62 Nova convertible is black with red interior, the primer on the outside is very light grey , but the inner body is all red oxide.

Thanks for the information.  I never saw light gray primer but I'm sure they used all shades and colors of primer back then.

So the body color had no effect on what color primer was used?

Not from my understanding. But I'm not guaranteeing it lol. Seems there's not a lot of consistency between assembly plants.
