Hi fellows. I wonder what is the reason for using the cut-off style bumpers like those in the photos. Is there any practical reason for that or is it just a fashion? I plan to use this feature on a beat up Mack DM 600 truck. But if I do I´d like to know why do some trucks look like that.

I had heard years ago that the handling was better at highway speeds.  I also heard it was cheaper to just cut the ends off after minor accidents.

This 83 Freightliner came with a full size bumper. It was replaced with this short bumper to save weight. The wheels were also changed from steel to aluminum and a shorter stack (after this picture) was installed to save weight. So, I know that weight was a factor sometimes.
