Lindberg 1/16 Stutz Bearcat Build Racer Build

The important thing was deciding on 1/16 scale Lindberg kits to build.

Was getting nowhere with 1/24 and 1/25 kits.

Looked over Lindberg Model T, Mercedes Racer and this one and then said to myself 'This scale works for me'.

They had been sitting on the shelf for 10 years but circumstances came together and the lightbulb went on.

These are all 'low part count' kits and the parts are big enough to handle and fit together easily.

All you have to do is just do it.

Supplies and a tool are on the way to build it.

They seem to be older part number that is not even on Xuron's website.

So figured to take them off Hobbylinc's hands.Why not?

Xuron's are Made in USA.

We buy American whenever we can.

Like some of the Lindberg and MPC kits. They go to the top of the list.

In the meantime will cut off the parts off in this kit the time honored way. With the Exacto knife.

Progress report.

Cut some parts off parts trees.

Did it with Exacto knife. Used little piece of hobby plywood underneath. Perfect!

Picking out a glue next.Testors original or thin solvent glue? Leaning towards testor's because of gaps between parts and that is what I am used to.

BTW Paints are on the way. Enamels instead of acrylics because they cover better.

Just recommended colors. Red, Flat black,Wood,silver and flat brass.

Built these kits a long time ago.

Studebaker Miss Deal and Revell atomic sub with one side open. Made a real mess of them but they did get put together!

They just reissued them but I passed. You can't go back.

Also built Cord in deep red and Model A Gabriel metal model. Still have them.

Safe to say they are not museum quality!

Update

Planning to glue some assemblies today.

Added missing paints to hobby order.That was stupid only ordering half the paints for this model. I don't know what I was thinking!

Successful first gluing today.

None of the glue on fingers and everything else from childhood builds.

Used plain old Testor's glue.

Glued frame extensions onto frame.

They made it that way so pieces would fit in box.

Rear leaf springs are next.

Well. There is a little problem.

Glued those front frame stubs on wrong.

You had to hold them 'up and in' when you glued them.

I only held them 'up'.

Have and evil plan.

Will jump over to same kind of kit. A Lindberg Mercedes Racer.

This time pay a little more attention to what I'm doing.

Will cut apart and fix Stutz later.

Changed title of post because switched over to Mercedes Racer kit.Glued Stutz frame together wrong. Will cut it with Dremel later.

This is a JJ Lloyd issue.Made in the USA. Cedar Rapids IA. Nice place that is. So is Iowa City.

Those are some bags they put the parts trees in.So you can use them around the farm later I guess.

Snipped off some parts with the new pair of Xuron sprue tree cutters.

Kind of fun.Did cut off part of radiator though. You can get carried away with them.

This frame you glue two crossmembers between the two frame halves.

Going to look it over carefully this time. Test fit and double check.

Don't want to make same mistake as on Stutz.

Figured out how to use the belly pan as a guide to hold frame rails together.

Want to build it without the belly pan but it needs some support while gluing in two crossmembers.

Will tape and clamp pan and frame rails together.

Glue parts,let them harden overnight and then remove pan.

Update.

Glued frame together.

Used under pan as an alignment fixture.

Taped everything in place with masking tape.

Came out pretty straight.

Big news!

Did some test painting.

Been using Acrylics.

Ordered some enamels and big can of thinner.

Painted a 1/25 car body with Model Master primer.

What a difference! Covered in one coat.It's more like paint that I remember using as a kid.

Okay. Back to Mercedes.Will probably glue some parts together.Get some more gluing refresher experience.

Will just use Testor's tube glue.Pickup where I left off a long time ago.

Okay.Glued together rear end.

Used a toothpick to spread glue around.

Worked pretty good.

Will get the one digital camera going and see about posting pic's.

Next step is to glue front axle and rear end to frame.

Glued front axle in.

Had to use cut off toothpick to keep axle frame rails spread apart.

That was so axle would set flat on leaf springs.Frame halve were toed in a little.

Next is gluing rearend in.

Exactly what was the problem with building 1/24 or 1/25 kits? Bad vision, hands tremble or what?

I do not care to READ what you are doing. Please post pics.

PLEASE don't use the tube glue. Use a medium thickness CA super glue, available in any hobby store or via mail order. The improvement will be immediate.

Also, super glued parts separate after drying much better than the tube glue. You could still be building the Stutz.

Doing a little side project testing paints for this project.

Painted a chopped T body with Model Master Primer.

It came out with brush marks.

Thinned paint on next car body.That helped with brush marks.

The thinned paint is a good enough finish for this Mercedes Racer kit.

Next will test coverage with and without primer.Look for bleed through too.
