Ryansrust6 Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 Started this one recently trying to learn to do fake wood. Any one have pointers I'd appreciate it thanks
El Roberto Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Oops, forgot the narrative. Spray base coat of what color you like, in the case of the prop I used desert yellow. When dry apply clear coat . Mix artist's oil paint with mineral spirits or odorless paint thinner (NO enamel thinner or lacquer thinner) brush on the part you're painting, lightly drag a stiff brush , like a fan brush, over the wet oil paint to get a wood grain effect. if you screw up, no problem it just wipes off. Let dry forever and recoat with gloss coat. Actually, if the oil paint is thinned quite a bit it only takes about a week to dry enough to clear coat. With practice you can get fairly convincing results.
Ryansrust6 Posted May 11, 2018 Author Posted May 11, 2018 Thank you sir looks great I'll give it a try
Roncla Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I was just at Wingnuts web site yesterday and they have a page in their Hints and Tips on woodgrain. Its the same process as Robert describes but they use a sponge. http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/hintsandtips
espo Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 I have built a few Woody's and Truck bed floors. For the lighter colored wood I'll start with light shade of tan or beige. Then dry brush a very little bit of a darker shade to look like wood grain. For a top coat I'll use some Clear Yellow. The darker portion I'll start with a some what darker brown and again add some graining effect followed by Clear Orange like you would use for a side marker on a late model vehicle. With a little practice it can look pretty convincing especially with a coat of Clear sprayed over it all.
