Monty Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 Those of you who've built their 1/24 Boss 429 and other variants might recall that their tail light treatment calls for the builder to paint a clear plastic piece red and install that behind the chrome bezels etc. Since tail light lenses are actually translucent, I wondered if using candy red over gold on the clear piece would give a better impression of a translucent red tail light than using solid red. Haven't done it yet. Just curious what you guys think.
BigTallDad Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 Use red food coloring in a small amount of Pledge with Future. The number coats/dips will determine how red and how translucent the part is. Practice on the clear sprue.
espo Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 In cases like this I use a scrap of Bare-Metal Foil on the back side if the tail light. You can also foil the inside of the area where the tail light will mount. This way any "light" shinning thru the lens will reflect back thru the translucent red.
Snake45 Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 You can paint it candy (transparent) red, or you can paint it Testor Stop Light Red, or you can "paint" it with a red Sharpie (will take a couple applications). Testor also has a Clear Red Acryl which is especially good for this stuff. Tamiya has one too. There are many paths to the top of the mountain.
El Roberto Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 Try Tamiya clear red, that's what it's for. I back the clear part with bare metal foil or Molotow chrome.
