GeeBee Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Is there anything close to Chevrolet engine grey from Testors or anything else close from other model pajnts, or is it just a matter of mixing something up that's going to be a close match ?
SfanGoch Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 FS36237 would work. Checking my trusty Humbrol Colour System, No. 87 Matt Steel Grey is a match. for Chevrolet Engine Grey.

IIRC, I painted this Airfix O-1 with MM FS 36237. Looks pretty close.
SfanGoch Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Rich, FS 16473 would work too. It's a tad warmer than FS 36237; but, inside the ballpark. Funny thing about 36237 is that it was deleted from FS 595. I attempted to make a comparison between 16473 and 36237 here but got an error code. When I checked the 595 palette, 36237 ain't there no more. BTW, check out Tru-Color paints. The Military Colors are excellent! I found this Tru-Color "Grays" color chart at Arizona Hobbies' website. Either color would be suitable.

SfanGoch Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 No problem, Geoff. I've always liked Humbrol paints. I still get them on this side and even have tins that are 40+ years old that are good.
Snake45 Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 I was wrong. I was thinking of 36375. I believe I painted that Bird Dog with 36375 (Light Ghost Gray) because a local RC shop was closing out some random Testor Paints and I bought several bottles of it VERY cheap just to use for primer. (I don't build that many Ghost Gray airplane models.) Here's a color chart I did at the time. 36440 is USN Light Gull Gray as used in the '50s and '60s. It has a definite yellow/tan tint to it. 16473 has a definite sky-blue cast. 36375 has a slight sky-blue cast. 36373 is a color I've run into a few references too, but can't really find much information on. Walmart Color Place Gray Primer is in this ballpark, too, but it doesn't have either the yellowish or bluish casts of the grays below.
Art Anderson Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 When I was researching the color of my 1941 Chevrolet pickup model (Revell kit), I discovered that the Gull Gray that was used on the crankcases of Pratt & Whitney and Wright radial engines purchased for US Navy use in WW-II, "Gloss Gull Gray" was adopted, using Chevrolet Engine Gray as their standard. Except that the gloss version of this color was what was specified--flat finishes and cleanliness on engines notorious for leaking oil wasn't at all recommended. Art
SfanGoch Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 Use a semigloss/gloss clear and you'll achieve the proper finish.
