Breezy Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 Hello. I've looked over the board and searched so if this is already a topic let me know. What do I use to clear metallic acrylic also just acrylic? Pledge cracked on me on my last one. and I'm looking for something permanent. Thanks in advance.
68shortfleet Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 I have used Tamiya X22 clear on my last two builds with excellent results. I have only sprayed it over Tamiya paint so far though.
Theo Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 I have used Minwax Polycrylic a few times and it has worked for me, although not as deep a shine as other clears. https://www.minwax.com/wood-products/clear-protective-finishes/interior/minwax-polycrylic-protective-finish
BigTallDad Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Krylon makes a product called "Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating 1303" I use it to seal decals, so it should be fine for clear coating acrylic finishes.

I wouldn't be so quick with that recommendation. Some water-based acrylics are very sensitive to solvents (even if those solvents are safe for decals). Whenever a new paint technique, or paint combination I always recommend a spoon test. Seeing unexpected paint reaction on a car body I spent hours preparing is not something I want to experience. And plastic spoons are cheap.
Dave G. Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 (edited) Ya I do my test painting on empty prescription bottles. I go through the whole process from scuffing the surface and priming on up to what would be the finished model if it were one. You never know when you mix products at what stage things might take a dive.. But to answer your question, I'm using Liquitex gloss varnish on my acrylic paint jobs when I want gloss, I have it in gloss, satin and mat. And I mix the satin in craft paints to get the fabric luster on interiors. Very pleased so far. I signed up for Micheal's coupon program so when I get a coupon for a single item 40 or 50% off is when I buy the varnish. Makes it affordable. The stuff flows out like melted butter, dries crystal clear and has uv inhibitors in it. Works for me anyway. Edited December 27, 2018 by Dave G.
