DDD Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 I painted this with Aztek Acrylic and color sanded it after 3 days ( that is what the pics are of) and not sure if I sanded it good enough or to much and was told if I pour water on it that what it should look like after you clear coat it so poured water on it it look to be clean and glossy, not the case!! after clear coating it with MM acryl clear gloss. Even after clear coating it I tried to wet sand with 2500,3000,5000,7000 and then tried to polish it with Novus 2 and 3 and it looked like BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH I could see the rough texture still, so I stripped it and re primered it and waiting now to paint it. So my question is there a video out there on what your acrylic paint job should look like after you color sand it or any advice to help me out with this issue. So any advice, links to a video or a certain modeler's site that that would help me. Thanks again I appreciate all the advice this site is pretty awesome.
DDD Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 Sorry these are huge pic's not sure how to get them smaller and posted this twice!! not sure how I did that. I'm no good a computer stuff either.
Snake45 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 What I see above doesn't look too bad. At least the color is solid and even. Here's how I'd proceed at this point: 1. Lay on one coat of Testor Wet Look Clear lacquer--not quite wet, just enough for the next coats to "dig into." 2. Lay on two or three more coats of WLC, just barely "wet," each 24 hours apart. 3. Let dry 24-48 hours. 4. Sand the WLC starting with 3M #1000 WetOrDry, used wet to keep it cutting. 5. After the #1000, wet-sand again with 3M #1500 or #2000 , again used wet. 6. Polish with Wright's Silver Cream, a silver polish available at Walmart. Your Novus might work equally well at this point so I can't vouch for it. I KNOW how the Wright's works.
Dave Ambrose Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Doug, that looks like orange peel. No practical amount of super fine sanding will fix it. Orange peel is a huge problem down heat due to the heat and low humidity. I don’t know if you’re using an airbrush, but if you are, try thinning the paint more. Lay down another color coat and try to make sure it’s a little wet. If you’d like more guidance, come to the San Diego Model Car Club meeting. We have a lot of expertise in painting.
DDD Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 Thanks Snake and Dave for your help. So Dave you are saying I should color sand my model then shoot another color coat on? My problem is I'm not sure what the the paint is suppose to look like after color sanding it because I can't seem to airbrush without getting a few pieces of lint in the paint. Do I wet sand just enough to get it smooth and the hairs or lint out or do I have to wet sand until it's all dull? Also thanks Dave for the Model club info.
