David Thibodeau Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Ever since Dale switched to Hendrick I felt horrible that I never did a full blown #8 Bud car...... Truth is I loved the red car.. But everyone has done it! So when Powerslide came out with his patriotic scheme from the July Daytona race I was in love..... How can you not go all out on a car so beautiful!!! I quickly got the part I most enjoy rollin.... the body! Using the 2006-07 RM kit it is in its "multi media stage" ready for primer.... I have been tinkering with this body all week.... I used the back creek resin nose from skip at S&J models and grafted it into the kit fenders using superglue as a filler. Superglue sands smooth and never shrinks! Hood underside detail was added and it was hinged. Rear trunk was hinged and detailed with a new bigger brass spoiler grafted to the deck.... The rest of the standard details were done: Roof flaps, skirts with integrated exhaust and it was time for primer.... Here are primer pictures with my new favorite primer... Rustoleum auto primer.... A little thinner than duplicolor filler primer... Its good stuff!
David Thibodeau Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 I got the body painted, cleared, polished and as you can see some decals applied. Two set on alot of them..... The blue is tamiya mica blue with one coat of HOK Kandy Kobalt.... Striking scheme if I do say so myself..... next up, a chassis to go under it!! The candy gives it some dark but yet POP at the same time!
David Thibodeau Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Well I promised you guys a chassis so here it is!!! I think its my cleanest one yet... Of course Clay's fotki had a hand in it too... lets run through some details.... I used PE PROTECH Wire looms for the brackets across the package shelf for the window brace rods to connect to which I will add later. The fuel cell area was all made with square stock and .080 round solid tubing. Another "Clay exclusive" is hollowing out the rear chassis in the wheel well and adding the frame rails.... It adds such realism... Nothing I would do if it was a wheel on the car build.. No need!! You can also see the scratch built oil tank. As usual all you see here except for the frame rails is scratch built using .080 and .060 solid plastic tubing. I dont heat mine as you can see.. I have good luck bending the stuff.. Some wider side plates on the chassis were added as well as the engine cradle bracing. This will allow me to cut the lower control arms away from the kit unit and add them later after I clean and paint them. Integrated bars on the drivers side complete the chassis... Next up is to prime and paint the chassis and the platform is laid out for the detail!! Oh by the way.. that is 3 I repeat 3 8 door decals....... No bleeding at all now!!!
David Thibodeau Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 now its in paint and ready for the fun stuff!!!
David Thibodeau Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Over the weekend I got the chassis going on the bud car Front a arm detail with walthers jack bolts, RB motion ball joints. Steering linkage and P/S box is done and plumbed. Oil filter is from Pro tech with scratch built reciever on top. Scratch built Heat shield mats on the floor. Oil tank lid and gauge detail Thanks for lookin! DaveT
David Thibodeau Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Got a little more done over the weekend done on this one.... Wheels and tires are done. This was the kit wheels and tires. Since the newer kits fit better I drilled them out and detailed them. And the seat is done. Jr. ran a black ISP style seat in this car which the kit replicates well adding only some leg supports, foam, and flocking as well as new upper neck restraints from thin metal. Pro tech belts and hardware as well as pe bolts along with Willans decals from Mike's goodie sheet finish it off.... more to come soon........... DaveT
LVZ2881 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 WOW!!!!!! I am in awe!!!!! I love how smooth your paint jobs are David...
ismaelg Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to refresh this thread every few minutes and neither my computer nor my brain can keep up!! Beautiful as usual Dave. Thanks,
Mach2 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Wow, WOW. That is magnificient modeling David. Stunning.......................
RadRidesByDan Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The detailing and scratchbuilding is just NUTS....WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!
Clay Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Beautiful as always David, simply beautiful!!!!
Mach2 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 David, you are right about the Rustoleum automotive gray primer. It is a much smoother finish and is outstanding. I use it now instead of the Dupli-Color gray filler primer. Thanks for showing the Rustoleum primer.
David Thibodeau Posted May 31, 2009 Author Posted May 31, 2009 Back from the DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Engine is created..... Lots going on here... Black block, red Bell housing and metallic gray Trans. Of course there is loads to go but its definitely on its way. I used a AMT lumina water pump after I sanded off the lame one in the revell kit. Then I plumbed it properly as well. The pulleys are from detailmaster. You can see the holes in the front heads which will support the ALternator and P/S pump (see Jay? ) The sump pump is scratch built....... I did the oil pan a little different on this one. I noticed these days the pans are a very lusterous aluminum with weld seams. I made some welds out of thin plastic and diveted them up when the plastic was soft with a knife. Once all of it was dry I primed the pan, then painted it with Duplicolor chrome paint and forced it to dry well in the old dehydrator. There is still lots to do on the trans but I removed the shift linkages and will work on adding RB motion rod and ends to that area... Scratch built banjo style fittings in the pan..... Nothing would be complete without a test fit of the engine!! Its starting to get that look..... more to come if my ADD allows me to stay focused.... DAVE T
John Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Just beautiful work as always. I really like the flat fittings you used on the side of the oil pan!
The Creative Explorer Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Makes me wanna toss all my modelling stuff out of the window, i feel amateuristic this is just sick
David Thibodeau Posted June 1, 2009 Author Posted June 1, 2009 Thanks guys.... Engine is 90% done.... I need to scratchbuild solder headers and do the fuel delivery system and its ready to go in. Of course another test fit for motivation.... ;D Dave T
stangman Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 David, This car is awesome!!! I love the attention to detail and how precise everything looks.
cruz Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 You are so talented my friend!!!! Awesome stuff......
Matt P Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 This is shaping up to be a masterpiece. I'm a fan of all NASCAR super detailed cars, and this is a great car to due because of the graphics. A great pairing for it would be Sr's 1996 Olympic Atlanta car. I can't wait to see the finished product, good luck with it.
RacinRay88 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 David, I'm a big fan of your nascar builds!!! they're just so realistic!! i hope you dont mind but for my next build im going to take some tips from you! im doing dale jr's 2006 richmond win car with the blown out tire! keep up these awesome builds!
