george 53 Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Guy's, I JUST got back from the Toledo NNL, and man, was the drive worth it! I got to meet the "Big Kahuna", Mr.Biggs, Mr.1/16th, Bill Geary,Norm Weber,Lyle Willits,Billy Kingsley,And Just too many more to remember just now, and beyond a doubt, these guys are ALL great ambassadors for our hobby! I loved it! The models were above the norm, Kinda like beein in Model Car Heaven! Dudes, If you ain't never been to one of these, You just GOTTA go, It's EVERYTHING that folks say it is and more! GREAT PEOPLE, GREAT models, and GREAT memories. Personally, it was a great pleasure to meet Gregg himself, and he REALLY is as cool as he seems! Easy to talk to an NO ego to get in the way. Just a GREAT person! I'm tired an I'm gonna hit the sack now, but I just might head back tomorrow(it's only about an hour away,if that) An I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas. I tell ya guys, IT WAS GREAT! See, I'm still grinnin from ear to ear!!!
Wildrice Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Sounds like a fun time. But where are the pics?????

novadose71 Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Wow, thanks for the pics Pat. So many great builds, and so many ideas. I was hoping to go this year, but it just didn't happen and decided to go to a more local show, and ended up working overtime and missed that one too. DOH! I'll just live through your pics for now and maybe, end up there next year. But honestly, didja really have a good time George???????
tim boyd Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Yeah the NNL Nationals was superb this year. Around 780 models and all the people the room could accomodate. And two of the longest running model car projects ever. First Dan Thomas shows up with a Dune Buggy for our cult theme that he started in September, 1968 when the AMT Car Model Dune Buggy contest was announced, and completed....well completed LAST SATURDAY! Thus a 40 year and 1 month model car project. Surely the longest ever....until... Norm Veber lays a 1965 issue of the Blue Bettle on the table....that he started sometime between 1966 and 1968...including scale hinged doors....and finished LAST NIGHT! Thus a 40-42 year old project from beginning to end. These are the kinds of stories that make the NNL Nationals such a great event. We had a great turnout for our Dune Buggy cult theme including four entries from two guys who traveled from Sweden! Next year is the 30th NNL Nationals and the theme will be 1964-1974 Pony Cars. The NNL Cult Theme may be Bonneville models. TIM BOYD PS - Pat's photos do a great job of capturing yesterday's event...TB

Hey, I also met Tim Boyd, Sorry I forgot to mention that, An the 2 guys from Sweden ( can't remember their names though) Man, I was thinkin of goin back, just to go to the swap meet,But Honey-Doo said too much of a GOOD thing ain't so good fer me!($$$$$$) But I did good I think, I only spent about 50 bucks, 2 T-shirts,a pair of Traks aluminium BB Chevy valve covers, from Bob Black AND the entrance fee. But, like I said, If you ever have the opporitunity to make one,DO IT!!! You won't be sorry! OH yeah, I was lucky to make new freinds an get to know alot of the names on the forum. Hey, Billy(Kingsley),Thanks for showin me around and to Tom (Grampa's Toys) Woodruff, (I hope I got that right) for pointin out some really killer models to photograph, to add to the memories! It really WAS Model Car Heaven!!! And wountcha know it, when they were callin the forum members outside for the group pic, I din't know it and I din't get in it! What a drag! Never been inna magazine before.Beside, It was probly for the best, cuz I probly wooda broke the camera!!!
Modellpularn Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) So you met my old friend Olle Möllheden. Or as he sometimes calls himself: "Chromecop" or "Darryl O Möllheden" he's a big fan of Darryl Starbird and bubble top customs. I guess he brought his tiny dune buggy pedal car. I've been there myself, but it was a long time ago now that you count the years..... 1992. Wow, does time fly!! I remember I also had a blast at the show, and we were four guys from Sweden. george 53 Posted October 12, 2008 Author Posted October 12, 2008 Oh yeah, Ed it was a GREAT time. Bill Geary lives near Pittsburg too, an he was tellin me it was like an 8 hr drive or so. He came with some buds an they helped split the cost. But I tell ya what , I had such a good time that I WILL be at the next one! Hopefully, you an the guys(Will an Brendan) can make it sometime and I'll get to meet all you guys!
george 53 Posted October 12, 2008 Author Posted October 12, 2008 Clay, that green semi was bad wasn't it? Gregg was takin pics inna corner he had set up, and the fella who built it was busy with him, so I din't wanna bother them. But there was a really late entry, I don't know if it got photoed, But it was a Deep blue color with neat skulls airbrushed into it and it was too cool too! It's one of those "had ta be there" kinda things and it was great!!! Try to make it to one, if you can, an you'll see what I mean. Oh, by the way, Mr.Biggs's 300 Peterbuilt won Best of Show. Ya should see it up close an for real, caz it truly is awesome!

MrObsessive Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 George it was great to finally meet you and I had a blast!! I just got in an hour ago---------------Actually I'm quite far from Pittsburgh (about 3½ hours east of there). I left Toledo around 10:00 this morning and got in around 5:45. That's not too bad considering I stopped to eat, get gas, bathroom breaks, etc............ It was also great to meet Mr Biggs, Mr 1/16th.........and a host of others I hadn't seen in quite some time. George's right fellas!..............If you're in the midwest, you GOTTA make the trip at least once to Toledo! You'll never regret it!
