unclescott58 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Okay, this turd of a kit is done. It looks okay in general. But... The details on this kit are terrible. It's kind of a semi curbside kit. The hood opens, but there is nothing really there. The interior isn't much better. The paint on this kit turned out great. But then I had troubles with the old decals. Particularly with the one that goes on the front of the hood. The only way I could figure to save the decal in the end, was to put Mircoscale Liquid Decal Film on it. This saved the decal, but left some wrinkles around the decal on the paint. So this not a solution I'd try again. Again, the model looks okay.
unclescott58 Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 I know this not an impressive model overall, but not one single comment, good or bad? Wow! This kit is a bigger loser than I even thought.
PappyD340 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Well I can't speak for anyone else but it looks very good from my chair!

Over all I think so too. I'm kind of proud that I was kind of able to make silk purse out of a sow's ear. Or at least do a decent job on the kit.

This kit is a bigger loser than I even thought. Don't take this the wrong way please. If you put some effort in presenting your work - the model you spent a lot of time building - the proper way, people would comment and respond. Taking blurry pictures on a model box from strange angles, with other stuff in the background is not a very interesting or conducive for commenting. Start with getting a piece of white or gray poster board and curve it against a wall to have a backdrop, and take pictures of your model from a low level as if you are standing next to it. It will create a much more realistic view and uncluttered presentation that will focus on your model. Hope this helps. I like the model btw, its a crappy kit, but you made a good looking Porsche for your shelf!

But, there will be no next time with the AMT version of the kit. If I build another Porsche 928 I think I'll hunt down an early Tamiya kit. I really like the looks of the early 928s. Before the spoilers. And I remember building the Tamiya kit back in 1979. Other than not liking the scale (1/20), I remember being very impressed with the kit. It may have been my first contact with any Tamiya product. And the start of a budding romance with Tamiya products that is still going on to this day. (In fact the AMT 928s body was painted using Tamiya paint. That's why it turned so well.) Edited May 17, 2020 by unclescott58

After seeing the asking prices for Tamiya's Porsche 928s on eBay, I won't be buying another one of those in the near future.
Funkychiken Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 yeah, I/m not so keen on 1:20 either - nothing wrong with the scale, but it would be the only car I'd have at that scale & wouldn't fit in anywhere! And they are now pricey...
