ksnow Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 (edited) I'm starting on a 1970 Buick GSX. I want to build it stock. Curious what color the transmission pan should be. It is chromed in the kit. On the net, I can't find any good pictures of the transmission area. I did find out the valve covers were chrome for stage 1 cars. If a chrome pan was a fairly standard "period" replacement, I may just leave it. Edited October 11, 2020 by ksnow
Classicgas Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 My best guess would be aluminum on the transmission and steel on the pan.
espo Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Normally the Transmission Pan is just an unpainted thin metal part. The slight oil seepage from the mounting gasket between the pan and the transmission housing is sufficient enough to prevent the pan from getting rusty. After market is limitless as to finish and materials.
Quiet Eric Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 When looking for reference material, its pretty easy to google the car you're looking for and find a nicely restored one for sale with a lot of good pictures. In this case...it looks like the pan would have a silver finish, probably a zinc coating originally. https://www.sheltonclassics.com/vehicles/89/1970-buick-gsx-455-stage-1
ksnow Posted October 11, 2020 Author Posted October 11, 2020 Thanks guys. Looks like it gets the steel colored pan I am familiar with. Just wanted to make sure the stage 1s didn't come with something fancy. Quiet Eric, thanks for that link, I'll be using a lot of those images in this build.
