Michael jones Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 This question may be a bit late as I have already built a number of racing cars with clear over decals, but I was just wondering how should I remove the decal setting/softening solution "stains" before clear coating. I usually wash the body with the decals on, in soapy dish washing solution before clear coat, but just wondering if there is a specific cleaner which is best for the usual decal setting/softening solutions by Tamiya/Mr Hobby/ Micro Set/Sol etc. Thanks
peteski Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Some more aggressive setting solutions can actually attack the paint surface. If a gentle wash with dishwashing detergent and water doe not remove the stain then it has affected the paint. Well, you could first try to take a cotton swab moistened with some of the setting solution you used on decals and gently rub the stains. In my experience, if the stains are not very prominent, the clear coat will hide them.
Bills72sj Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 I use plain white vinegar as a low cost setting solution. Very water soluble and non staining. Then again I have yet to switch to acrylic paints.
