Did you really mix the Stynlyrez well ? I use Kleen Strip. However I've gotten reports of where lacquer thinner in some parts of the country in order to meet standards there is mostly acetone. I don't believe mine is, it doesn't smell like acetone. I just shot white Stynylrez Sunday thinned nearly 50/50 with Kleen Strip, came out fine.

Just so you know, Badgers own recommendation is to thin it slightly with water. They don't suggest thinning at all but if you are compelled to then use water they say. I've done that too,it works but was more grainy when dry than with LT.. As to an alcohol based product like washer fluid I've shot stynylrez with IPA and with DNA and IPA worked better. All washer fluid is is methanol and water mixed together with a little dye in it. Basically a Methanol type alcohol and water.

I'm doing a re-visit to this thread instead of starting a new one.  The last 3 times I sprayed the Stynlyrez gray primer it dried with a rough finish that I had to smooth (sandpaper/or steel wool).

I quoted you Dave because I know you use it a lot.  I sprayed it with my Mr. Hobby Procon #3 tip airbrush and it sprays  just fine unthinned at 25-30 psi.  The humidity and temps at the time of spraying varied some but in todays case it was ideal. Today I added Liquitex medium thinking maybe it was drying out the nozzle but the finish is no different the the last 2 times.

Got any suggestions Dave or any other users of this product??

Have you changed your distance so it's not going down as wet. And I assume you mean that straight from the bottle it normally shoots fine through that airbrush ? But now is nubby or fuzzy requiring sanding etc ? You might just need to ensure it goes on wetter than in winter, this time of year.

I shot white two days ago straight from the bottle and it came out fine. When I thin it I use lacquer thinner these days, goes on real smooth, on the 1/16 Model A fenders I shot last fall or so there was a sheen to it.. Tried water I think last year or maybe two it looked fine wet but dried rough to the touch, a quick scuff with 000 or 3000 grit fixed that. The only other time it went fuzzy was on a 39 Ford sedan roof, I think I just moved too fast on a fairly warm day with dew point in the low 60's. But 000 fixed that.

I've got a bottle of Badger Stynylrez "Metal" coming in the mail soon.  It's supposed to result in a primer coat that finishes like a Model Master metallizer.  I hope to take advantage of that by shooting Model Master metallic paints over it, as they're slightly translucent.  If this works as planned, the "metal" effect should give the paint a little more "pop".

That said, I've also got a bottle of Mr Hobby Color Leveling Thinner coming.  Seen a lot of YouTube videos on this stuff and it seems to work well with acrylics and enamels.

I'll see how the primer shoots with and without it.

Sorry took so long to respond to your answer Dave, having some weird internet issue so typing this on my phone.

I figured maybe I was initially spraying it too far away and maybe too fast of passes. So, I got closer and slowed down. Still dried with the rough texture.  Guess I'll jusbe doing the 0000 to smooth it. I really like using this stuff but just wish I could get it on smoother. Heck, rattle an Krylon goes on smoother but then again, it's not acrylic.

I shoot it at 23-25 psi, 25 static, 23 flowing. Or there abouts. Have you ever thinned some of this then returned the unused remainder to the bottle ? A little leaven ruins the whole loaf theory. Water filter in your airline ?

As I said except a hickup here or there mine goes on smooth, when I want it thinner I've settled on LT then it lays down even more satin smooth. Best I got for ya except to maybe contact Badger.

The 23-25 psi is exactly what I did. I have a water filter on the compressor. If my old brain can remember the time I'll try a little lacquer thinner as you suggest.

Thanks for the input Dave.
