Saturnine Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Hey has anybody here used any of the carbon fibre/kevlar decal sheets from Scale Motorsport? I was interested in buying a couple packs, but wanted to see what others thought of it first. I notice it comes in different scales,,,,1/24 and 1/48. I'm only interested in 1/24. Is the scale actually correct? Does the carbon weave appear the right size in 1'24 scale? Any tips or reviews are appreciated, thanks.

As you know, carbon fiber comes in different sizes for different applications so saying it is to scale is never really correct, but it is very close. I have also received some of his new stuff as used on the FXX kit. When it becomes available, it is really killer. All the decal is, is the fiber pattern printed on clear carrier. You can make your own base color. Check out the work on the this thread "Jean Todt's Ferrari FXX". Very convincing pattern. If you use the original pattern you will need to look at the tutorial on the SMS site. http://store.scalemotorsport.com/merchant2...p;Store_Code=SM It is for the upholstery pattern, but the process is the same. Failure to follow the process with result in huge frustration. The deals are a bit different to use, but they work. Patients is the primary ingredient. Use abundant amounts.
Brendan Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Matthew's product is excellent. Probably the best out there. Though it can be little pricey at times. As regard to it being 1/24 scale, there's really no such thing as that in carbon fiber. There's so many different weave patterns on a 1:1 scale car that you're just trying to get the closest that you can get. I've used 1/12 scale on 1/24 scale cars because it was close to how big of a weave pattern I needed for the car.
chris coller Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Personal preference I have used Studio27 and Scale motorsport like them both. I use the 1/20th scale twill weave alot only because it has more definition. I like studio 27 cause the over lay very well. I seem to have issue overlayining SMS twill weave. If you go over complex curves make templates use micro-sol or decal softener of your choice. To help aid me in my process I use a hair drier on low temp and q-tips to help smooth out the decals. Just let the decals sit for alittle. About a minute because the decals become very soft after applying heat. I hope taht helps!
935k3 Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Scale Motorsports patterns are very nice but I think the decal film itself is some of the worst stuff I have ever used. The glue sucks and they can be very brittle at times. Tamiya's are very nice and be bought through Tamiya America by asking for the ones sold with various kits. I wish somebody else in th US would make some better quality ones and give Mr. wells spme some competition. I am sure Studio 27's are good like all of their other decals. Don't even try the Detail Master stuff it is absolutely the worst and is transparent over any darker colors. I have some old Modeller's sheets that were very nice and used them on my Toyota GT1, they are out of business but you might find some on E-Bay. Crazy Modeller also makes a bunch of different styles.

The older sheets are somewhat brittle because he was using Microscale at that time to create the sheets.... The newer sheets he carries are now by cartograph and are awesome...... DaveT
Tonioseven Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Here's a couple of examples of Scale MotorSports CF decals... Hi-definition... Bronze... Green... Pewter... Plain weave... Hope this helps.
crazyjim Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 You might want to check out mywingbling.com. They're down here in Florida. They put some kind of film over water, spary a release agent, and dip the parts into the water. They can do all kinds of finishes. I don't know if the chemicals would harm styrene and I don't know what they would charge. I know that doing the dashboard, side covers, boomerang on a Honda Gold Wing costs about $1500.00.
