Troll through 1944-1949 Popular Mechanics, and Mechanix Illustrated magazines. Many small photos of G.I. Ingenuity in action. Lotsa Jeeps and other small vehicles converted to one off custom jobs. Many very creative men, with time and extra parts on their hands. They built some amazin' things.

I cannot find it, but I've seen photos of a SeaBee built Windmill powered Washing machine on a small Pacific Island.
