slusher Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 Mike, man sorry about your hood. Those edges can be easy to burn thru..
mrmike Posted April 10, 2022 Author Posted April 10, 2022 Actually, there was a scratch near the edge of the hood and my attempt to fill it with a little paint and a fine brush did not work out like I had hoped for. The burn marks across the top of the performance section of the hood was the worse of the two and I decided to repaint the hood instead of having the repairs display themselves.
mrmike Posted April 16, 2022 Author Posted April 16, 2022 (edited) After much preparation, I added another coat of paint to the hood only to have fogging and pin holes in the paint! I knew I should have washed the hood first! But, then I discovered a crack in the paint. Now, this is not on the edge where I have added some styrene to extend the hood, but inboard about 1/4 inch from the edge. I have decided to toss the hood into a tub with some Easy-Off Oven Cleaner, remove the paint and start all over again! More Corvette to come... Edited April 16, 2022 by mrmike
mrmike Posted April 17, 2022 Author Posted April 17, 2022 I just tried to scrape a little of the paint off with a knife and it came off easily. Great! Now to wash off the hood of it nasty paint, let it dry, reprime and repaint
mrmike Posted April 17, 2022 Author Posted April 17, 2022 The hood has had the paint removed, been washed and now for it is ready for more bodywork! Oh joy! Have I ever mentioned that I hate bodywork? I do! The crack goes all the way through the hood and I am figuring a way to repair it. I also have to add a coating of filler over the top of the hood and sand it all smooth. More Corvette to come...
mrmike Posted April 21, 2022 Author Posted April 21, 2022 This is more like it! This is just a quick coat of Tamiya Fine Surface Grey Primer on the hood. Another coat of primer maybe and then several coats of Dupli-Color Forest Green Pearl! More Corvette to come... 1
mrmike Posted April 22, 2022 Author Posted April 22, 2022 I have painted the hood this afternoon! Dupli-Color Forest Green Pearl! I let this gas out for a day or two and then start the polishing phase. More Corvette to come... 1
larman Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 (edited) On 3/23/2022 at 9:06 AM, mrmike said: I found this on Google while I was researching this Corvette. What is a Chevy L89 engine? The L89 aluminum head big-block V-8 was one of the many powertrain option choices for the 1969 Camaro, but it was by far the rarest application. The L89 is endowed with 11.0:1 compression, as well as forged internals, a solid lifter cam, and an aluminum intake topped with a Holley 4-barrel. In Corvettes, the L-89 is a 427, with aluminum heads and a 3x2 intake, rated at 435 hp. The engine in the Revell '69 Corvette is supposed to be the L-89. The L-71 is basically the same set up, but no aluminum heads and is rated at 400 hp. The L-88 is pictured in a post above and was factory rated at 430 hp. These set ups were available from the factory from 1967 to 1969. Edited April 22, 2022 by larman
mrmike Posted April 22, 2022 Author Posted April 22, 2022 I noticed that my last painting sesson left some places on the hood undercolored. I added another coat or two to the hood. Then, the crack reappeared in the upper right hand corner of the hood. I am done chasing this crack around and will leave the paint as is and polish it. This was suppose to be a quick and simple build and then the cracks appeared on the hood. I'm just going to assemble the 'Vette and be done with it. More Corvette to come... 1
slusher Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 Mike I sure wish this would have went better. Your sure you don’t want to putty? Maybe another hood?
mrmike Posted April 23, 2022 Author Posted April 23, 2022 Carl, I had my heart set on this hood. This is the style hood I want and not the L88 style hood either. I have someone local sending me a hood and I hope it is the style I want.
dino246gt Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 Great work on that Vette, thank you for sharing the build so far! Take us with you to the finish with pictures, please!
mrmike Posted April 24, 2022 Author Posted April 24, 2022 (edited) Thanks Dennis! There will be more pictures to come of this project, so don't worry! A local friend has offered up a hood that should be here sometime in the next few days. Edited April 24, 2022 by mrmike
mrmike Posted April 28, 2022 Author Posted April 28, 2022 The Corvette is in the midst of Bare Metal Foil and final assembly before clearcoat. More Corvette to come... 1
mrmike Posted May 2, 2022 Author Posted May 2, 2022 I clearcoated my 'Vette with Tamiya TS-13 Gloss Clear. Maybe another coat and then some polishing. More Corvette to come... 1
slusher Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 Mike, I have to you showed lots of pascience with your corvette build!
mrmike Posted May 5, 2022 Author Posted May 5, 2022 (edited) Thanks, Carl! Why should I just blow through a build and end up having it look like garbage? I work on my projects when I have some time and never work on it in a rush! Edited May 5, 2022 by mrmike 1
kelson Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 (edited) Looks great in that color!,glad to see you never gave up on this build with all the setbacks. Edited May 5, 2022 by kelson
mrmike Posted May 5, 2022 Author Posted May 5, 2022 Thanks, Curtis! My only setback was the hood and getting the correct one. I decided to go with the hood that was originally given to me.

Maybe for the kit that they said had a 429 in it! ? It shows just how badly they wanted to put a kit out in the market and some of the details were left out. Now this is interesting.
mrmike Posted May 8, 2022 Author Posted May 8, 2022 My '68 Corvette is complete and posted in Under Glass. I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to view and to comment on my WIP. 1
