Aaronw Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I know there was a kit of the SVO at one time, looks like Monogram and MPC each did one. Would one of these kits be more desirable than the other?
Eshaver Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Arron, I was too busy at the time these kits came out to build models , but word has it that the Revell kit was the one to get . I saw a couple of enthusiasts build copies of their cars , I was impressed. I certainly think Revell did a better job of the "First generation Mustang than did A M T . Ed Shaver
MonoPed Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 The Monogram (Revell) kit is just wrong. The spoiler is carried over from the '83 GT kit with a "cap" for the top of the main spoiler and the upper spoiler. It is supposed to be an '85, but has the composite headlamps of an '86 as well as the engine and exhaust from an '84. The wheels are nice, the body is decent and the interior is right. The turn signals and corner lamps are just flat plastic, no lenses.
mikelo Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Thats funny Dave, I prostreeted mine when I got it. I put a blown V8 through the hood. I even cut the hood all apart so I could make it look like the scoop was centered on the hood. I have both. I tend to like the Monogram one myself. I guess it is because of the headlights and some of the molding. It does have it's inaccuracies, but as mentioned above, I prostreeted mine. My MPC one I plan on building stock, or close to. I just am not a big fan of the mustangs from MPC from that era. I have seen some really nice ones. I'll have to pull it back out. I thought the motor wasn't as detailed, and I really dislike the flat chrome headlights. Mike
Aaronw Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Thanks, I just like the SVO, it kind reminds me of Max's V-8 Intercepter from the Mad Max movies. I thought they were neat when I was in high school but the idea of a turbo charged mustang didn't seem to catch on.
whale392 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Personally, I have built both and like the MPC kit for body detail better than the Monogram kit. As for interior and engine/chassis detail, the Monogram kit is better.........and no you cannot convincingly mix them as they are noticably different scales.
tim boyd Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 At the time I had done a whole series of Ford Dealership sales meetings on the SVO Mustang in Northern and Souther California, and I drove the SVO Mustang I used for those meetings. (Some certain nameless national model car luminaries may remember a rather, shall we say, brisk drive from LA to San Diego one afternoon in that SVO). (Another luminary may recall the day he nearly sent us down the side of a cliff when he got a bit too enthusiastic with the go pedal on wet roads when I let him drive it.) The Monogram car kit came out not long thereafter and while I did not build the MPC kit, I remember comparing the two unbuilt kits and prefering the Monogram. As some of the replies state above, I remember the engine, chassis and interior being better to the MPC. I also remember the Monogram spoiler being better although I would defer to those above who state the opposite. Anyway, here are a few pix of the Monogram model I built that replicated the 1/1 SVO I drove for awhile back then... tim boyd Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Also, dealing from memory here (always risky!) but the flush headlamps came in at '85 1/2 and the kit was correct for the time it came out. TIM
