stitchdup Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 Hi Guys, I've discovered I have an extra hood for the monogram 36 coupe I'm building and since i have a spare I'd like to try and hinge the centre. Any hints or suggestions of how to do this would be appreciated. If it goes well I intend to hinge the hood sides too but will make that decision after doing the top as I only have the 2 sides so as to reduce the risk of wrecing them
Street Rod Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 I would like to do this, too. The idea I had is to find a small tube, maybe like small medical needles where the hole through the center would be the right size for a piece of guitar string, small E or B, cut small pieces of tube and attach to each side alternating sides and put a piece of the guitar string through with a tiny bit sticking out of each end and bend down to hold the pieces together. Would have to sand a bit from each side of the hood to allow for the hinge assembly. Hope that long winded thought makes sense, lol! Interested in what others may have done to accomplish this type of thing.

That makes perfect sense, I think I have some tube that might work as the 36 has a decent size rib on the hood that i can trim away for the tube. and my sisters a paramedic so i might be able to get some canulas or needle tubes. thanks
NOBLNG Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 Here is how I made some piano hinges that could be a possibility? You can also apparently buy similar photo etch hinges. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/161632-fabricating-piano-hinges/#comment-2510325 1
Greg Myers Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 (edited) It's all about scale. I don't believe you can achieve the necessary function in a scale that small. I have used some fine linen paper folded and glued it to the appropriate pieces. it can be painted and works rather well. I'd post a picture except I've traded the car (Monogram "30 Model A Phaeton) to a friend' Edited August 17, 2022 by Greg Myers 1
