Ah, The SR-71 Blackbird….. one of my all time favorites. He was the driving force behind THE fastest aircraft built to date.

When I lived in Colorado Springs 20+ years ago, I remember driving on Kelly Johnson Boulevard that was named after him..it is close to the US Air Force Academy.

Leading his team with just basic drafting tools he designed some of the most iconic flying machines. Oxcart A-12, SR-71, and the U-2. are just a few of his creations that started with a pencil and paper.

Today is the 23rd anniversary of the last flight of the SR 71 Blackbird. First flown on

December 22nd, 1964. The SR-71 is the pinnacle of Kelly Johnson's career.
