93Z34 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Has anyone used the vinyl top spray paint from Testors? If so, what kid of luck did you have and how authentic looking did it turn out? There are a few projects I'd like to add a vinyl top to and was wondering about the success of that paint. I know alot of people used masking tape, but I've heard of the adhesive drying over the years and the tape eventually comes apart and ruins the model. That's why I was wondering if Testors paint system for vinyl top worked or not....
Aaronw Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I just saw a car posted on FSM that used it for a vinyl roof. Looks like it is worth playing with if you like vinyl tops. http://cs.finescale.com/forums/1080682/ShowPost.aspx
cruz Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I had seen that GTO on the Finescale forum and thought the texture was a little rough. Jairus told me about a trick using 3M spray mount adhesive and I loved it. You should be able to obtain it at a Michael's Craft store.

Did you just paint over the adhesive? I am puttering with the Monogram Plymouth Superbird and that already has the vinyl texture on the roof. I am wondering what i should use to paint over that to make it look even more realistic. The Testors setup came to mind first....
cruz Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Thanks, I primered over the adhesive first, sanded it down with a fine grit (4000) and ultimately paint it with Model Master semi-gloss black. I would suggest to add a tad of flat black to that semi-gloss black though, I still think it's a little too glossy even though some club members have told me it's good enough.....
samdiego Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I've used the Testor's for undercoat and bedliner, I don't do many vinyl roofs. I've used it for interior texture too as well as the fabric black. I think the grain in the roof paint is a little large. It clogs the spray tip pretty easy too. Overall, I'd say it's good enough. Close, fast passes reduced grain size for me.
