Dr. Cranky Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I put this one together in the last couple of weeks. I have always wanted to shorten one of these great Hasegawa VW kits . . . and it was pretty easy. What took the longest, as you could guess, was doing the paintjob. I wanted to make this one into a mild-mannered ratty vehicle but with a bit of style. One that served two purposes: shop truck/parts runner and a weekend vehicle to cruise up and down the coast in . . . I did not go out of my way to detail too much of it, as is quite obvious. Here are some pics I hope you will enjoy: No back glass just in case the driver wants to put a surfboard in there. I guess in that case he should not have pugged the body, right? There are more pics of this build over in Cranky's Fotki archives. http://public.fotki.com/vsuarez666/voodoo-...pug-bug-pickup/
coopdad Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Cranky, another awesome project! Inspiring as usual! Got any interior photos you can post? Didn't see any on the link. John
Dr. Cranky Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 Thanks, John, I will try to take some closer shots of the interior. Nothing fancy about it. Just some upholstery and a stickshift, that's about all the detail I put into this one. I left the bed alone thinking if I build a matching surfboard it'd go throught that rear window on the passenger side.
B-dub Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I'm not meaning to sound bad about it (i couldn't have done 1/16th as good) but the fresh shiny chrome parts throw me off.. Mainly the antenna it sticks out too much with everything else being weathered. But then again maybe he had to put a new one on it so he could listen to some tunes as he was cruisin
fordh8r Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) But then again maybe he had to put a new one on it so he could listen to some tunes as he was cruisin That or maybe the chrome quality far outlasted the paint quality from the factory. Nice build! This thing looks like it would be popular in a place with a very dense population. I would envision a major city in like China or somewhere like that. Pretty cool. Dr. Cranky Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 Yes, I do have to tone down some of that new chrome. Here are some pics of the interior, or as close as I could get with the camera: The grainy look to the dashboard is the paint I used on the seats . . . River Rock by Krylon--I don't know why in the world I thought it would be cool on there!
Old Dog Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) It just makes a guy think "I could drive something like that". Great job! Edited February 11, 2009 by Old Dog
fordh8r Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 The paint on the dash does kinda add that certain charm.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 Thank you for the comments. I just toned down all of that chrome and it does look better. Stay tuned in for some pics . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 I came back and dulled all of that glaring chrome with a flat aluminum wash: here's the result:
carrucha Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Cool little pickup. Great work on the weathering. carrucha
fordh8r Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 The chrome looks dead enough to me. Maybe some specs of rust will do it some good too.
James W Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Shoot, now I just want to throw the one I did against the wall... Very nice, love the patern of rust on the roof, very real.
RodneyBad Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Excellent job. that would be more fun to drive than smart car.. Now where can a guy find a 1:1? I'm sorry.. That VW is just SOoo Dang CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like a puppy. probably marks it's territory too.
RJWood Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Dr. Cranky, You come up with some of the coolest build-ups. Very nice job on this one.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 Thanks for the great comments, folks. You guys keep me smiling. I saw one of these VW busses shortened like this at a show and it always stayed with me. Of course, that other one had received a shiny paintjob. I still see these types of vehicles out there, though I would imagine by now they must not be that cheap. Oh, man, now you've given me a great idea for a simple base: A piece of concrete surrounded by a chainlink fence, a dog bowl in a corner, a few patchy tufts of grass, and a sign that reads: BEWARE OF THE PUG!!!
fordh8r Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 A piece of concrete surrounded by a chainlink fence, a dog bowl in a corner, a few patchy tufts of grass, and a sign that reads: BEWARE OF THE PUG!!! Yeah, that would be sweet. Then all you have to do is build a garage that looks like a dog house with the dog's name over the door.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 LOL That's what I love about his forum--things get out of hand quickly, and they always lead to more fun!!!
Raul_Perez Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Virgil, Another great build!! I really like your weathering skills!! As for the new, shiny chrome parts, they can be explained by the new JC Whitney catalog on the front seat!! Keep up the GREAT work and thanks for sharing!! Later,
