I need some help guys. I am trying to paint some resin cast hood and fenders. I washed the parts in hot dish soap water, paint fish eyes, I soaked the parts in the purple pond and washed, paint fish eyes. Wiped it down with lacquer thinner, paint fish eyes. Not sure what to do. Using Tamiya primer.

Well this went from oh no, to oh BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH, to worse, to junk. Managed to save and remove the paint on all the resin parts that where actually causing the paint problems but the gray cab itself is now junk. Luckily I have another white cab. Tomorrow I will start over. A setback for sure  87407EF5-2329-408E-910C-120CE72B8486.jpeg.2eccc37f01872325acb0d045ebb1b665.jpeg

Well you are not alone on problems like that. I have a half way build Caterpillar that the same thing happened,,,paint just would not lay flat. And when I tried to use purple bath to start over the paint and primer wrinkled and just refuses to come off.

That is the last time I use Tamiya paint, I a lot of modelers use it but it just never does good for me. I am sure its not the paint but somethings I do but Tamiya went out the door and going to use Vallejo from now on. Had used Vallejo before with good results but I tried Tamiya for only

one reason, only hobby paint I could buy in city where I live.  So waiting on order of Vallejo.

Sure do like the looks of that truck you are building,,

Same problem with my cab, just wrinkled up and with all the molded in detail of rivets and seams, you just can’t sand it down.

I've struggled w fisheyes on resin, no matter how much cleaning I've done. I spoke numerous times w Gary Wallace about it, and he always suggested Duplicolor sandable primer. Light coats then color. Its cut my issues in half

Too bad you lost your cab, but having a backup plan keeps you moving.

Thanks Jeff, went to the automotive paint store today and talked to them. They recommended the Duplicolor sandable primer and suggested just what you said.

I will now be using a different cab, same model but there is a slight difference in the cab width. So I made four cuts, removing material so that I can refill those areas with filler. Made a spreader bar to gently encourage the hood to be a bit wider and flatter. Cuts marked with a pencil. 3C171D52-CD68-472D-A726-D719468130A5.jpeg.6704f1b918b3f58c43c9bcf5172de480.jpeg
this gives the hood and cab a better fit. 5428F98D-DF8F-4F76-A5F9-F06362561D12.jpeg.cfad3ca28a770ee96f5d38edf5e9fc99.jpeg
we will see if this works, if not, I may use the 5000 hood and call it good, finishing this truck.

The primer worked very well, no fish eyes or problems on the resin parts. Did a test piece to make sure I can spray Tamiya gloss paint over the primer and it looks good. Sit over night, light sand on primer then start applying base color paint  7515E93E-E58C-40B2-97FF-1810FBAF7447.jpeg.d310e558c602d79677770d3f9be1c67d.jpeg

So glad the Duplicolor worked put for you ! Its my first line of defense working w resin parts. The primer might take a couple days to really cure, but my squirrels have enough projects going to allow me time lol

Love the modern look of that hood, gonna be an awesome truck

Looks tasty, well done for hanging with it. It would be in the bin if it was me m

It has crossed my mind several times but not done yet, still could end up in the trash bin.

For anyone doing this hood conversion. I did not glue the cab crossmember in place, that will be last. I had to slide the cab back to center the front wheels in the openings. Therefore the radiator and motor must also slide back. With the cab cross member out, the frame will flex enough to slip the engine into place. Today checking trailer fit, fitting engine, radiator then make the under chassis exhaust parts. D82C3F9A-2573-4110-8E79-E78379B5F30E.jpeg.64afb3eb5bdb806750c139c35c82cb0d.jpeg
