BKIN10SECS Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 (edited) Inquiring if anyone has had any success or tips on what clearcoat to use over the Revell chrome spray paint. Thanks Edited August 29, 2023 by BKIN10SECS
Dpate Posted August 30, 2023 Posted August 30, 2023 Alclads aqua gloss would work fine, but it’ll dull the finish like all clear coats will.
Rich Chernosky Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 I have used Tamiya X-22 clear over AK Chrome (similar to Revell) and have found very little dulling and a nice shine. Thin with Tamiya X20 thinner. Other thinners, like Mr Color leveling thinner will eat into the chrome ands dull it.
mikos Posted September 4, 2023 Posted September 4, 2023 I wonder if an acrylic coating like Pledge Floor Shine (Future) would protect the Revell chrome paint from rubbing off without dulling it

I just tried brushing some strait from the bottle on some Revell chrome that had been drying for a few weeks ,,, dulled it.

All of my results were from airbrushing. Brushing X-22 allows too much of the solvent to sit on the finish and that is what dulls the finish.

For me, it's good but not perfect. Any dulling would put it into the "pointless" territory for me.

The clear coat was very necessary as the decals would not lay down properly over the chrome finish. This was my second or third project using this technique.

That model looks fantastic, but to me, it doesn't look like chrome, although it does look better then what I did last night. Good to know that decals won't stick to the AK stuff though and you figure the Revell is about the same? I was planning to use it on some 1/144 airliner models I have so now I know to look out for that. Edited September 4, 2023 by Can-Con typo
