Staining a plastic model kit

I'm interested in making AMT 3 in 1 Boat- classic Runabout boat and I got Testors wood stain. What is the best way to apply the stain? To me when I think of wood stain ,you would put a coat on then take 

a cloth wipe it off and then repaint the stain because the wood surface has a coating for the next coating. But this is a plastic model so is a primer needed? Thanks in advance .

Wood stain won't work on plastic.  There are techniques for simulating a wood finish on plastic, none of those I'm aware of use wood stain as part of the process.

There are many excellent techniques of painting wood grain already on this site. Your only problem is to decide which one you want to use.
