Horrorshow Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 Started with the AMT 1968 Roadrunner kit. Plastic Performance wheels, tires and roll cage. Styrene headlight and taillight covers. Powerslide decals. I had some issues getting the roll cage to fit and the window trim is so small I was unable to BMF them. I saw this paint scheme watching a YouTube video of the 1968 Firecracker 400. 12
MarkJ Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Excellent job, Jack. Paint, decals, cleanliness of work are all top of the chart on this one. You should be proud of your efforts. 1
bobss396 Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Super job! I never saw that color combo before. There were a lot of one-off cars even back then. A later Road Runner he had was the one with the peeling vinyl top and the advent of 200 MPH tape. The team was so disgusted with Plymouth by them and jumped ship to Ford for the '69 season. As Petty Blue was trademarked, Ford had to come up with a new color for them to use, Grabber Blue.

There is quite a bit of disagreement on whether it really was a "vinyl" covering. One story is that the top was embossed metal and painted black to disguise that it had been acid dipped to significantly reduce it's thickness and the embossing was done to improve airflow to compete with the Dodge Chargers, Ford Torinos and Mercury Cyclones. Not sure how much truth there is in the story, but it was discussed on a NASCAR forum some time back. HorrorSHow, GREAT job on the model. Fantastic! 1
bobss396 Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 I believe it was vinyl. Some said the pebbled texture was an aerodynamic advantage. BUT... team Petty would at times do something to distract people from looking at other things on their cars.
ncbuckeye67 Posted November 9, 2023 Posted November 9, 2023 Wow, that's beautiful! I love when NASCAR used real cars! 1
