Building a 1/8 Firebird ala Bonneville 

looking for tips on Salt simulation

I have not tried it, but I always thought that fake snow you get in spray cans for Christmas decoration looked a lot like the salt deposits on Bonneville cars. I don't know if they even still sell that stuff anymore, but it used to be around a lot when I was a kid.

edit: Just checked; readily available.

Some creative spraying may be required. Probably not a precise sprayer. It might be worth checking if a paint can nozzle will fit. The large scale you are working in will work to your advantage.

Gonna mess with real fine grain salt

Have a look at the thread below. He says he "used some thinned white glue and some fine white embossing powder to add a little salt".

I don't know where you live or what the humidity is like there, but real salt will absorb moisture from the air, and might make a mess over time.

I seem to remember many, many years ago I made a Christmas scene and used the fake snow in a can and after a couple of years it turned clear and/or disappeared.

Here’s what the sand you get at the big box stores for your sidewalks looks like.  The plaque was painted with white house paint then the sand was added and after drying another coat of paint. It seems a little coarse for 1/24 but maybe okay with the bigger scale.
