Jon Cole Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 CRS has struck again. Tho I have painted a few models with Tamiya white, I cannot for the life of me remember if I clearcoated them. Do I need to clear over Tamiya white? -Jon-
FujimiLover Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 If you have decals on the body, say for example emblems, logo's, liscence plate et'c, I would clear coat it anyway. It not only gives the car a better shine, it helps protect the decals and can even hide the outlines of the decals. So no matter the paint and/or color, I'd clear coat it. Just make sure the paints are compatible as some dont' always work well with others.
jbwelda Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 i think a bigger problem you will find will be the clear possibly either having a yellow tint to begin with, or having it yellow with age, and having that completely throw off the color tone of the white. i myself have not painted in white and sprayed tamiya clear over it to know for sure, but i would advise you test it before committing to it. white is a funny color: it seems simple but there are a lot of variations in true tone. i prefer a lot of blue in a white, makes it appear more "white" and bright, but yellow totally kills it for me. your mileage may vary i suppose.
PatRedmond Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 It'll punch up the white nicely, but you don't HAVE to. I find clear-coated stuff easier to polish and keep dust off of.
FujimiLover Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I love white cars, but they are tricky to perfect. What bug's the heck out of me the most with white, is trying to paint that darn window trim! The slightest error is greatly amplified on a white car! You've gotta make it absolutelty perfect!

This is so true. Test your clear first.....put a small amount in a clear paint jar. If it isn't 100% crystal clear, don't use it. Automotive Urethane is the best to use, but pricey. Future floor finish is just as good, IMHO....and cheap! And it WILL NOT YELLOW.

Do I need to clear over Tamiya white? -Jon- And to answer the original question, no, you don't really "need" clear over ANYTHING, except a base coat/clear coat system. The clear DOES help the shine and makes polishing easier.....but if you're using gloss paint, its not really required.
Zoom Zoom Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Tamiya white does not need clearcoat. Tamiya TS clearcoat will not yellow. Testors products ruined so many modelers, paintjobs and models over the years to the point almost everyone is overly cautious and thinks clear over white is dangerous.
