Slim Louis Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 (edited) Pretty cool kit, real similar to the 56 Del Ray, in fact shares a couple of parts trees, but includes some, but not all, BW racing parts. I'm going to build a two car team, numbers/drivers to be determined. ATTENTION DECAL MAKERS< I'M READY TO ORDER! Mostly OOB except for the 20 gal. fuel tank, I used one that looked similar from the 57 AMT new tool kit, and centered it, removal of spare tire well, four rear shocks, ( they should have included the extra shocks and mounting brackets!) In 57 chevy attached the rear shocks to the floor which didn't work well on the street, much less a race track!, rear end stiffener, and exhaust sleeves through the frame rails. I guess I'll use the kit tires, I'm just not used to such a spindly tire, but it scales out, right enough. Chassis is coming nicely, body is ready for paint, here's where I'm at. Slim Louis Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 I believe the stress factor was the reasoning NASCAR used in banning them on the HM Fords and Stroppe Mercuries in '64!
tuffone20 Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I like what you have done so far! I picked one of those kits up on Saturday and it's on my list of models I want to do this year!! I'll be keeping an eye on your build for stuff I can use for my build
Slim Louis Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Thanks Tuff! Did a little tire and wheel detail painting, and I think those skinny tires,(reatively speaking) will work out OK. What do ya'll think?
Bernard Kron Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Great to see a W.I.P. from you, even if this one doesn't include one of your awesome scratch built tubular frames. The little details you're including along the way (like the wheel centers for example) are real eye candy and will pay off big time on the finished model. I can't believe you're not doing your own decals - you must be planning something very special to trust someone else with your work.
Slim Louis Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Thank you for the props, Bernard, I am building my first to kits into the BW team. I have an old MPC flip nose 210 sedan mounted on a new tool AMT 57 chassis, not quite a tube chassis, but more elaborate then 1957 vintage "stock"! Do you you think I should post some WIPS on those, too? I have two of them, ones mild, the other a little wilder. Let me know!

berr13 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Heck yeah, after seeing what you've done so far, I'd like to see all your '57s. Two questions--is the ride height in the back OOB or have you modified it? And have you encountered any build problems yet? Anyway, lookin' good so far, so don't keep us in the dark! Jim
Slim Louis Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Thanks, OK I will then. It might be fun to compare the three generations of 57s bowties, 50s, 60s, and 70s!
Slim Louis Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 The nice thing about "The Detailer" wash is it's water soluble. Don't like it or need to tone it down? Take a wet Q-tip and wipe it off!
Slim Louis Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Cool, I'm at that same stage as we speak, applying the black paint!
philo426 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Now i have to let the paint cure before i can BMF it and mount the body to the chasiss
Slim Louis Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 (edited) Painted! Will BMF in a couple of days. I'm not use to adding all the chrome bling goodies, either, but it's kinda fun. Closest I have built to a street car in years! Link to the build http://public.fotki.com/slimlouis/dark-sid...-/?cmd=uploadns Edited April 1, 2009 by Slim Louis
philo426 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Looking good!Did you have any trouble fitting the body to the chassis?
Slim Louis Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Not yet, but I don't have the firewall installed yet. Need to do some work to get the front end down a little. Looks like a gasser!
Slim Louis Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 First of all, I messed with the front suspension, moved the spindles up, and got the stance much more aggressive! I like it! I'm happy! here's the chassis, extra front shocks, four rear shocks, differential stabilizer, and exhaust through the frame rails. Used the HD chevy exhaust manifold, and cut up the kit exhaust pipes. There are two sets, stock and racing, both have mufflers! Go figure! Also removed the spare tire well and centered the 20 gal. gas tank. Will add tie down straps soon! All thats left is foil, glass, decals, and clear! Fun build. Next post will be finished, no more till then! Link to the build http://public.fotki.com/slimlouis/dark-sid...evy-150-black-/

Dragon7665 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) Very Nicely Done So Far!!! CALL ME STUPID BUT IM COUNTING 6 LUG NUTS????? TOM I ALMOST BOUGHT THIS MODLE TODAY BUT I OPTED FOR THE PETERBUILT 359 CONVENTIONAL TRACTOR INSTED DONT ASK ME Y TOM Yeah RM really did their Research when they did this kit, when it comes to the wheel lug count at least.... Chevy used Chev/GMC Truck HD 6-Lug Suspension pieces and Brakes when building these early Track Monsters Edited April 2, 2009 by Dragon7665
BigGary Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 CALL ME STUPID BUT IM COUNTING 6 LUG NUTS????? TOM I ALMOST BOUGHT THIS MODLE TODAY BUT I OPTED FOR THE PETERBUILT 359 CONVENTIONAL TRACTOR INSTED DONT ASK ME Y TOM I'm assuming that this kit models special "unofficial" production cars made by a place in the south under GM's supervision. They are the only '57 Chevys made with 6 lug wheels and other special goodies. If they are the ones I'm thinking of they put grills in the fenders on the NASCAR models so that air wouldn't be trapped in the fender wells. I read about them some time back but don't remember many details. Gary
Harry P. Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 That place was SEDCO (Southern Engineering and Development Company), a company basically set up by Chevrolet as an "undercover" operation to build NASCAR Chevies.
Slim Louis Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Here's some links pertaing to this subject, very interesting reading! http://www.57chevyblackwidow.com/ http://public.fotki.com/slimlouis/nascar/n...evrolet-compet/
Slim Louis Posted April 5, 2009 Author Posted April 5, 2009 I received two sets of Black Widow decals today from Mike Herman,"Power Slide", this weekend. They look fantastic! I hope to get this car done this week and get the pictures posted. Stay tuned!
Glue4U Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Hi Slimlouis. The decals you talk about for the BW made by Mike Herman where are they available? Has he any website so i can see the decals and maybe buy some from him? Or maybe you have any picture of the decals? Waiting for an answer... Best wishes Anders L Sweden
