rattle can man Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 When using silly putty to mask something, DO you tape large areas and then use the silly putty to finish th between the tape and where the edge of the mask wing will be? ie. when masking a chassis/frame unit, mask the large areas of the floor with tape and then use silly putty over the tape edge and up to the frame?
OldNYJim Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Whatever works! Personally, I use the putty to get in the little crevices that would be tough to tape, then tape whatever’s left…but there’s no wrong answer if it works! 1
Mike 1017 Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 The way that works the best for you, is the right way. I have used Silly Putty as a "Slop Mold". Mike 1
rattle can man Posted August 9, 2024 Author Posted August 9, 2024 i wasn't sure if the tape sticky side of the tape would stick to the putty or not.
peteski Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Interesting. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silly_Putty Silly Putty is a toy containing silicone polymers that have unusual physical properties. I also know to keep anything with silicone as far away from the painted car bodies as possible since it can contaminate model's surface causing fish eyes in the paint. I wouldn't think of using silly putty on anything I'll be painting.
