when painting an old kit "molded in color, I know you need a good primer or sealer to prevent color bleeding through. I have also seen it recommended to use silver paint. my question is what about other "metal" finishes such as copper or gold?

i just did an orange revell vw bus tailgate after the camper one didn't fit. i used duplicolour hdr silver after the primer and it worked well. i'm not sure if copper would work as its close to the red/yellow/oramge plastics that are the biggest offenders. you run the risk then of finding out too late that it didn't work. i have seen other people use gold sucessfully but haven't tried myself yet

The color bleed is usually only with red or yellow color plastic, and only when using light color for the paint.  It is also not just specifically with old kits.  Some say that the problem doesn't exist, while others confirm that it does. There are several variables in play (including the type of paint used. It is not all cut-and-dry.

When you asked for using metallic paints other than silver, what was the reason?  If you want to use those as a barrier, any metallic paint might work well.

Instead of asking a generic question, why not tell us more specifics? Like what kit is it, what color is it molded in, what you are planning as a final coat, and what brand/type of paint you want to use.
