kymdlr Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Are these two kits interchangeable to kit bash without major modifications? One appears to be more detailed than the other from pictures I’ve seen. For example would the 67 chassis under the 66 body or the 66 interior tub fit in the 66 body?
Mark Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 The two kits were created many years apart by different people, so expect to do some work (maybe a lot of work) to use parts from one with the other. 1
Carmak Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 To add to what Mark said: The 66 is a clone body of a promo-based kit originally designed in 65-66. It has a tub interior, metal axles, all suspension and exhaust molded to the chassis. The 67 was an all-new kit when designed in the 90's. It has a platform interior, detailed suspension and separate exhaust. If the plan is to kit-bash the chassis of the 67 under the 66 that could/should work. If doing this be aware the modern 67 kit tends to sit high in the front and the front track is a bit wide. I built one recently and spent a fair bit of time getting it to sit the way I wanted it to. The pics show my result. I intentionally did not cut down the tie rod to show how much I moved in the spindles. 3 1
kymdlr Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 Thanks guys this info helps. Yes pairing the 67 chassis to the 66 body was my plan since the 66 is so basic and the metal axles. I may just go with the Revell 66 kit over the AMT.
Carmak Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 I will say that to my eye the AMT 66 Mustang 2+2 body looks better than the Monogram/Revell body (this kit was originally designed by Monogram and has been re-branded as a Revell). 1
Bob Mako Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 I've been working on a similar project, only with the AMT '66 hardtop. The AMT '67 chassis fits the '66 body well, with the wheel base very close (not dar enough along to know about the track). However, you will also need to cut the underhood/inner fender wells from the '67 body to use on the '66. That piece fits well also. The problem I've run into is the interior fitment. As mentioned above, the old kit is a tub while the new is built up from the chassis. I cut out the floor of the tub to fit it onto the chassis but it sits too low for the tops of the doors. I tried to add sheet plastic to the bottoms of the tub but it didn't look right. That is as far as I got before it went back in the box. Ironically, I deleted the pic I had of it yesterday when cleaning up my pic files on a new computer! I am away from the workshop for a couple of weeks, but if you would like to see my progress, let me know and I'll get some more pictures.
afxmustang Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 I have used the AMT 1968 Shelby Mustang chassis and interior on a 1966 Mustang Fastback body. Didn't take a whole lot of work to make the fit ok. 2
