absmiami Posted February 3 Author Posted February 3 No one has ever made this engine in 24th sc - excepting the rare Christian Goul Lotus kit - not Tamiya - not Heller - not AMT - no one …. These engines were found in period Brabhams, Coopers, Loti, Lola - so it’s worthwhile making one …
absmiami Posted February 3 Author Posted February 3 The Tamiya 20th scale engine is decent - its parts will help guide me for basic shape and size - and there are a few 3 view drawings and cutaways that are helpful - plus a side elevation drawing in Bamsey’s excellent Haynes book on the 25 that is small also helpful …
MarkJ Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Wait, you are going to scratch build your own engine in 1/24th scale using an engine in 1/20th scale as a guide? This will be seriously awesome to watch.
absmiami Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 Not just the Tamiya engine - this is a drawing of the engine - as installed in the Brabham
absmiami Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 Finned Sump - Evergreen strip - about 15 peices - glued together w Tamiya liquid glue …
absmiami Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 The cylinder heads need to be staggered - right ahead of the left - Tamiya got this right -
absmiami Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 While the Tamiya eng is nominally 20th scale engine- its actually downsized to fit within the kit chassis and engine cover - so i’ll try to use the exhaust manifolds - and maybe the exhaust pipes - this way i can figure out the cyl head height - as the exhausts must clear the chass extensions left and right …
absmiami Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Have to make the engine as close to 24th as possible - because it won’t look right unless it fills the 25 monocoque - but it also has to fit within the body work - so i’m adding height here and trimmimg there - in the end - my Climax DOHC eight will be scale … fluid …
absmiami Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 By adding about a scale inch to the height of the block i raised the cyl heads and exhaust manifolds - so the exhaust pipes can skirt the chassis panels on their way to the collector above the suspension bulkhead …
MarkJ Posted February 6 Posted February 6 That engine in the background. Is that what you are trying to duplicate, but in a size that will fit? Or is that just something close to get you in the ballpark? I can already tell this is going to be Yup worthy.
absmiami Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 The Tamiya 20th sc Climax engine lurks in the background - mine will be the little brother - or sister?

absmiami Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 (edited) From the No 10 Edition 1962-63 Automobile Year pub … as first installed in the Cooper - by the way - the book was published with this picture reversed - thereby confounding generations of modelers - Edited February 8 by absmiami
absmiami Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Features on the left side of the block and sump - the bolts are Master Club resin
MarkJ Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Now you're talking. I'm seeing an engine emerge from the styrene and its looking fabulous.
absmiami Posted February 9 Author Posted February 9 Gracias - the cams were driven by chain drives - the chain drive covers are set-off - matching the cyl head set-off - again - the Tamiya eng helped me with the shape - it’s pretty accurate here - the cam cover bolt casings are made by shaving .020 Evergreen rod down to a half round and then liquid gluing to the casing … 1
