Many years now I’ve had this idea every winter to build this project and mark it off my bucket list of models to build but either life of other things got in the way. The Truck is the basic AMT Mack R with the AMT Ford Louisville Plow truck using the Dump Bed and Plow. I’m on the fence about the Salt Spreader.
This time of year reminds me when my brother Bill 18 years old at the time worked for our local County Road Commission as a Mechanic/Fabricator and when needed a Plow Driver from 1978-1983. Bill was also our Family’s Truck Mechanic too. This build will mostly be Box Stock. I’m not going to show you much of the play by play basic build of truck to bore you so I hope you ride along.

I’ve had that can of Benjamin Moore Tangerine safety orange since 1988 when I work at the Lead Mines. 😂 It still works!!

Will you be ok with the frame length or have to stretch it?

I think I may have to cut some off Scott I worked on the frame up till the point of mounting the rear cross piece for the square tanks so I could get a idea with the cab but I have to do some filling and cleaning on it. I don’t know if it’s just my kit or what. I guess I could open the other 11 Mack R model kits I have and hope to find a good one 😂. Or look through my boxes of Mack Parts in the parts department. 😂 Thanks for stopping by.

Are you going to make it into a Value Liner?

Off to a good start, Lee - that colour reminds me of the old Ministry of Transportation fleet colours up here.  Lots of orange trucks back then!

Thanks Brian I appreciate it. I’ll have to look that company up. Some of those Canadian companies were colorful.

You can easily make a Tenco style sander

Thanks Warren. Do you think it’s better that the one that’s in the kit? I have the kit one just don’t know if I want to use it.

Lee, the orange trucks were Provincial Government trucks not really a ‘company’ per se. The actual orange color name was Toledo Orange. The ‘experts’ decided the orange and white trucks weren’t as visible as the ‘school bus yellow’ ….. most of us who worked on the highways don’t agree but I digress.

Provincial Government

Jeff thanks for clearing that up. I thought it was a regular trucking company.

All highways maintenance was performed by the Provincial Government until the government of the day thought it was a good idea to privatize highways maintenance in October 1987. Then all B. C. Highways maintenance was performed by private companys , and then shortly after that they decided yellow was the color of the day….  Not intended as a hijack of your build thread.

No worries Jeff it’s good info and it’s on subject in my opinion. Here in the states they state decides what colors I think. Missouri is a School Bus Yellow. I’m painting this Mack base on the State of Illinois Hwy Department scheme they had in the 90s. The truck will be a County truck.

Good start,  I really like the orange. Will look great when done.

Dom

Thanks Dom I appreciate your complement. I really like that Orange too I got a half a can left then I’m going have to search for another source.

If I can get the plan together I’m planning on making a pre 1973 Mack R flat back pumper if I get stuck may have to call you 😂

Personally, I think orange is a way better color but they didn’t ask my opinion.

Ok I remember them now I looked them up.

They've had a few variations on their fleet colors over the years ,,,1689194775400?e=2147483647&v=beta&t=J5qbhFT3I76hYqalIwieX9rRMbwwX1oMo4W8jMeYz-s

I’ve seen a restored B model in this paint scheme. Nice Scott I like the green and orange.
