Pawing through both of mine - have a very personal take on the old Ford v. Ferrari battle to be sure.

Looking at certain bits, esp. the engines - and wondering if there are better solutions in the 3Dverse for key parts like the engine, etc.

I doubt I will be digging hard into the giga-detail aspects of either one (hell, I'd be happy just to finish) but if there are select goodies that make sense and dont bankrupt the rest of the stash, I'd be all in.

Thanks for any leads or help on this!

Here is a build that was a group effort by members of Model car creations.  We used a few aftermarket items and tried to make the oil and fuel lines route to the correct locations.  At a minimum the Trumpeter/Magnifer kit needs a distributor and plug wires added for realism.  You are right in that the kit engine is not very accurate and could be so much better.

Would Magnifier be the knockoff of the Trumpeter? I just took a 32nd look at the box and I am not finding ANY branding or insignia on it (!!!) which I'll postulate is to get around paying tribute to Deer-Burn (as we natives called it) for the licensing.

Really nice build, have seen a few around the web, and will be collecting / collating the knowlege, hopefully.

Yes the Magnifer is the same as the Trumpeter kit except for the Ford branding.  For a little over $100 for a 1/12 kit it is a good deal.

Neither kit came with a distributor which I thought was odd but it is up against the bulkhead and I guess whoever designed the kit could not see it on the real car so they just left it out.  Pretty inexcusable for a kit in that scale.  Yes the kit does not have the spare tire either like the real MKII but there are some aftermarket ones you can buy as well as better seats but after buying all that you will be spending more on the extras than the kit.  I bought a 3D distributor from a site I found online.

I built my Trumpeter GT40 before 3d printing was really a thing , but I adapted a 1/12 Corvette distributor (heresy!). I modified the kit seats since the KA aftermarket ones look worse somehow. I did splash out on Icon Automotive Miniatures tires and the KA spare tire, as well as decals from Best Balsa Kits.

It's a nice kit but it takes a lot of fettling, some of it pretty aggressive, to get it to look "right".

I'd be over the moon if mine turned out like this - how hard did you need to modify to bet this result?

The bones of the kit are pretty solid. Test-fitting is crucial and needs to be done vigilantly. The main modifications were the distributor and some extra wiring, carving the seats and adding photoetched washers for the rings in the 1:1 seats, and the aftermarket stuff. I added scratchbuilt switches to the dash and hinged the front hood panel as well. The kit PE covers a lot of detail and I didn't really need any supplemental PE. The issue I never was able to resolve was the slightly wonky fit of the rear clamshell, although I got it pretty close.
