For large scales, I make the rod ends myself.  I made a HSS tool for the lathe, shown in the pic below. The round end (~1/8" dia) was 'carved' with a dremel mototool cutting disk.

After making the round shape, I mill the flats or just hand file them while still mounted on the lathe.  I'm sure making such a tool is well within your capabilities.

andrew ,not sure how to take that. thanks ken,i had an idea of what i wanted to try, but i think i like your idea better. thanks for all your help and suggestions . fuel filler in trunk lid.got the air filter done. third set of headers. things have gone slow. spent a few days in the hospital and a few other things have taken alot of time recently.  thanks for all your input.
