Biggu Posted March 19 Posted March 19 I guess it’s time to try my hand at another build. After a lot of “work” on the W/S , I thought I would do something ‘simple’ with not a lot of extras and changes. I was thinking a good well cared for farm truck , but then I got to thinking that I made a few changes to the Star🤔🤔🤔🤔 and it worked out pretty good …… this particular truck, in my eyes was not Ford’s greatest hour as they say. But it could be made into something ‘different’, and not a fire truck. So with that in mind and I like work trucks and over my years as a gravel truck operator, we hauled a lot of hot mix with truck and pup for paving. And on those paving jobs there has to be an asphalt oil distributor, and our paving companies used them and sprayed and emulsion we called SS 1 tack coat. It is a water based emulsion that once sprayed on the road and warmed up it became ‘tacky’ and helped with the adhesion of the hot mix mat stick to the road surface. Back in the old days and I mean the OLD days they used to use distributors to spray real oil on gravel roads for dust control. Then back in the day they were needed to make a ‘blade mix’ which was a long windrow of gravel on a gravel road , then the distributor would drive the length with oil , then the grader would roll the the oil and gravel mixing the material and the oil passes and grader ‘mixing’ went on until it looked like ‘black top’ and was then known as ‘cold mix’ and could be stored in stick piles and used later for hand patching pot holes or larger grader patches. It remains soft and easy to work with until placed and rolled unlike hot mix which needs to be handled quickly while still hot and that is due to different emulsions and cut backs used. So with that explanation I’m thinking I will ‘try’ to convert this stake truck to a distributor. I may not be successful but am willing to give it a shot, and if this falls apart, plan’B’ will be to make this a local fuel delivery unit. Thats that though anyway. ….. Apparently I’ve had this kit for a while as the price on the box is $24.95 🤭🤭 , so I have a few things that I think I want to upgrade and / or change. I have a pe set for it and hopefully use as much of it as I can, AND to help with some of the finer derails, I have original sales literature that should supply a detail or two. The kit will need some love and a fair bit of de-chroming. I may change out the wedge brake chambers for spring brakes as well. I started the other day by cleaning up the cab. ….. there is a lot to clean up and sharpen up to make this old mould look good. The moulds do show a little age and this kit has been around a long time but still makes up to a reasonable representation of a C600. With this project I have tapped into some experienced designing and 3d printing. So right off I want to thank Jurgen and Bren for their offers. So we will see where this goes. As always comments and thoughts are welcomed. 1
Gary Chastain Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Well that’s a first for me, never seen an oiler built as a model. Gonna be some cool fab work there. 1 1
BK9300 Posted March 19 Posted March 19 I agree with Gary - lots to fabricate and will keep you out of trouble for a while! Looking forward to your progress updates. 1

freightshaker2 Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Excited to see this one! Haven't seen alot of conversions done on the topic! Good luck i know I'll be watching this one! 1

leafsprings2 Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Great idea for a build, the C series adapts quite well to just about any type of body. Had the same idea, kept this photos for inspiration. Your white Ford looks like the same series as this red Ford, which would be technically a C 800. 1
Biggu Posted March 20 Author Posted March 20 Thanks for those pics Tommy. You are correct about the C series adapting. It did that in spades. The kit is technically a C-600 but I am going to ‘upgrade’ it to an 800 which in this case is mostly just changing the badging. I does have the bucket seat option and the optional automatic transmission but has wedge brakes where as I will try to upgrade to S cam brakes, the Dayton rims will go in favor of optional 5 hole Budds, just a few little details. I do hope I can pull this off in a decent manner. Thanks for checking in and the cool photos.

ShakyCraftsman Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Well, I'll be a monkeys uncle. Jeff is doing a truck with an Automatic transmission! Mister I would never do a truck with an Automatic! Just messing with my buddy.😁😉 Sounds cool 😎 I'll be in the front row watching. Ron G 1 1
Biggu Posted March 20 Author Posted March 20 Well , here we go again …. Bolts …. The bolts on the inspection plates on Ron’s automatic 🤭are grossly undersized to my old eyes as are the ones on the rear end , so, with that said ….. we have bolts 3

cifenet Posted March 20 Posted March 20 It is always exciting when starting a new build! To be honest, this truck is in my "ugliest truck list" and I always wondered what those designers were drinking at the drawing board. It is like 60s si-fi robot with missing teeth talking to you. Nonetheless, the photo-etched detail set looks very interesting, show us what you can do~ 1 1

As I mentioned, this was not Ford’s finest hour, and it is homely for sure, but lends itself to all sorts of conversions as they must’ve built a couple billion of them over the years, they must’ve been a robust platform , but beauty was not part of the show …. LOL. I hope I can make it shine , thanks for checking in . 1
BK9300 Posted March 20 Posted March 20 I'm going to have to stock up on some of those bolt heads - can think of lots of places I could have used some along the way. Good to see this project underway! 1
Gary Chastain Posted March 20 Posted March 20 I have had a similar Ford kit (I think it’s a US mail truck) for years but never got motivated to do any thing with it, maybe Jeff will inspire me to build it. 1

Good to see this project underway! yeah, I’m going to have to restock as well, seems I use one or two sizes more often than others, I should have thought ahead when I was at your local, last fall. 🙄

Do I see another Restorod project? Dropped with a huge engine , zoomie headers, chrome rims ………. ? Edited March 20 by Biggu 1 1
