I've been looking at this one on my stash shelf for several years, knowing it couldn't be built stock and look decent.

The moulds are slushy and the trim detail and opening doors were wonky.

Glued the doors shut, trimmed off the vent windows, ground off all the badges and trim, radiused the wheel openings

Found some suitable shoes

Going for something like this

1957 Ford Sportsman

Will be using some of Bill Elliot's 9 decals

Throw back to all the cars I watched race up at Merrittville Speedway back in the day

I'd like to do one, really drop it into the weeds. Those old Ford "cow belly" chassis (through 1964) were used under many stock cars.

The front cross member gave them great strength.

Kit comes with a blobby looking 312 auto..going to need to swap that out with something more competitive for sure..going thru my parts to see if I kept a 351 4 speed ,,,maybe. And steal the 9" rear out of the '56 pick up

Cool build! I will be watching.

I do not understand the "cannot be build stock" comment though. This kit is far more accurate than the Revell 57's

It's not the kit cannot, it's more, I cannot build any kit box stock...lol

Besides, the kit itself is loaded with flash, bad fitment and warped, short shot parts...so...Stock car !

351 and 4-spd would be cool, you have room for most anything you want to run, even a 427/4spd.....  Any choice will be great!!!!   (Watching the progress)

The old NASCAR kits had decent engines in them. Another I like is the 427 in the 1965 Ford kit.

Yep, got a decent one out of an older Tbird,  also the Foose pickup has a Roush 427 I'm looking at stealing, will need to swap out the AOD trans on it.

More to think about

Started grinding out the exhaust, and ended up taking out the whole pan..things got outta hand

Hid the 'carpet' moulding on the interior floor with some .025 mm extended out 5mm (3/16") to meet the body shell.

...gratuitous mock up...

Might have found a doner engine

Looks awesome, Bruce. Really like the molding holes in the front fenders. Adds a lot of authenticity to the build. 57 Fords are one of my favorite all time cars. They really looked cool when they came out in 57. Long and low compared to the 56 version.

Looks pretty close to me, Bruce. Nice tight fit of the cage to the roof. Time to finish this one up and send her to the showroom.
