Dragline Posted May 29 Posted May 29 (edited) These kits could not be more diametrically opposed. The vintage Monogram 308 GTB has about 50 parts if its lucky. The Revell 612 Scaglietti is probably over 100. I got these at a yard sale perhaps 2-3 years ago. The Monogram kit was open and it was only missing the mirror. It has no engine and the decal sheet consisted of the plate and Ferrari crest for the nose and fenders. Paint is non factory dark blue with dark brown leather interior. The Scaglietti kit was sealed and could not be more different. Full engine and suspension detail. Fairly large decal sheet with carbon fiber and under hood as well as Instruments and badging. Quite a contrast in approaches. Monogram kits of the era were designed to be completed by a below average to average modeler, while the Revell has the more advanced in mind. Both are 1/24 scale and take their place in my ever growing stable of prancing horse builds. Upon looking at my photos I see I have to dig out some of the polishing compound on the 612. Ragtop Man Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Both builds rock. The Monogram 308 is easily the best rendering of the subject for shape and proportion, its hard to mess up. Found a "Rally" version that looked like a good start to replicate the early Michelotto 308 developed under the customer assistance program. The 612 is great as a kit, too. I've got a stack of the late model front-engine (599, 599 GTO, 612, SA ) and look forward to digging in for some building once the project is in the bag. 1
Rich Chernosky Posted May 29 Posted May 29 Interesting project and comparison. Sooooo...you are a fan of the prancing horse.......me too. 1
Dragline Posted May 29 Author Posted May 29 (edited) Thanks Ragtopman and Mike 1017. Rich, I've been a prancy pony guy since I was old enough to know what that meant. Ragtopman, for me the last manual pony the 550 Maranello is my personal favorite. As for the comparo. I didn't mean to at first. It all just started as I wrote. Edited May 29 by Dragline
beeRS Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Both Ferraris look great. The paint finish on the Scaglietti looks especially nice. Can I ask what paint type/brand of paint you used? I have the Scaglietti kit on the shelf and am looking forward to building it. I can only hope it’ll look as good as yours. I built the Mongram 308 as a kid. It is quite dated by today’s kit standards. I cut the roof panel out so it looked more like Magnum’s Ferrari, and of course painted it red (with a brush!!). Your 308 looks a million times better than mine, and the blue makes a welcome change to the usual red. 1
Dragline Posted May 31 Author Posted May 31 The Scaglietti paint is Duplicolor Perfect Match. An automotive lacquer for touch ups. It lays down nice, dries fast. But be wary of humidity. It is very sensitive to humidity and will blush easily. But clear coat makes it look great again once applied. Thanks
