As said before, the bottom line is application and design. What do you want from the drivetrain package?  I know engines have been built with both a supercharger and turbocharger (maybe even multiples). check back issues of Hot Rod magazine. For some reason I remember a nova with twin super chargers and twin turbos in an '80s issue.

I remember seeing that car on the cover of some Rod magazune back then.

Don't Forget Ernie Hashim of the Bakersfield Smokers, who was the first to put a front mounted blower on a Chrysler Hemi. he helped Don Garlits to be competitive on the West Coast back in the day.

I got to meet Ernie later in life. He was a soft spoken guy, but would talk about his cars. He had that first engine on display in his office. Wish I'd taken a photo of it.

"Loudest guy in the room". I bet that things limited to 8-10 pounds of boost.

I recall vw built a twin charged engine a while ago, supercharger and turbo working in conjunction. It was small displacement and not too great if I remember correctly. Not sure if they had them in the U.S.

the tfsi engine. it was an economy engine and never really took off. we did get sportier version of it but the 1.8t and vr6 (inc r32 etc) are the kings when it comes to tuning but the audi rs3 5 pots are fast gaining ground. i know of 2 of them running 1200 bhp and still daily driven but aftermarket management is pretty impressive now. there were rumours of an rs audi getting tfsi but they just went for turbos, however mtm in germany experimented with both on some audi s4 (by far the best audi if you want to tune it, and the base car for the rs4) in the early naughties

The 1.8t and vr6 I'm very familiar with, I've owned and built a few. My last vw was a 2.0t,tsi. Stock engine, mild tune(APR) 6 speed. Fun daily driver. I still have the built 1.8t from my 05 gti, full build big turbo ( gt3076), I couldn't sell that to just anyone, that car could get interesting real fast. It left with another 1.8t, frankenturbo setup.

my mk3 started life as a mulberry vr6 highline which is a kinda sought after car now but mine also had no sunroof which meant its a motorsport shell. it was the no sunroof that made me want it and i got it for a complete steal. I paid more for one borbet A (renault fitment so no need for spacers) than the entire car, lol. the vr only stayed in it for about a month before me and my friends ripped it out for the abf16v. I know where the car is now and its just not the same car now. its been sat and most of the good bits are gone. still, the vr lives on in a mk2 3 door gl

Question for you. I had a mk4 jetta, no sunroof. Only one I've ever seen, not that that's important. It was an odd car, option wise. I wonder if it was a motorsports shell like you described. Car got totaled on me one month into owning it

it could be, i've never seen a mk4 jetta without the sunroof and i'm jealous but there was a series race for them i believe. it could maybe be a brazilian versio, they got different options than us, including a strange almost mk5 version.

It was a Mexican built car, a "3" in the vin. Brazil is a "9" I believe.  You see why I'm confused about it. It's long gone now, I parted it out after I got out of the hospital.

Those were more for scavenging than "boost" in that application as I understand it. Detroit's are the original source for the 4,6-71 blowers.

Absolutely - I'd forgotten to mention that that's its objective.

I just love the way that those "Jimmy Huffers" sound. To this day I can still hear the rattling of a 6v-71 in the local buses ; the Jimmy winding-up and "screaming".

If I'm seeing the turbo plumbing on that jackwagon right, it looks to me like any boost from the turbos will be dumped out the throttle butterflies on the hat as soon as they open.

What am I missing???

There is an issue I have with turbo charged daily driven production cars I have that I don't know has ever been addressed. Back in the 80s, Turbo Volvos were EXTREMELY popular with the SoCal Yuppies. After the cars reached about 60k miles, they'd limp into the shop complaining about the horrendous cloud of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. (Never, it seemed, did they notice the colossal reduction in performance) What caused this was the impeller bearings in the turbo charger failing and wiping out the impeller shaft oil seals. The reason for this failure is the Yuppies would park their Volvos and shut down the engine, ending the oil flow to the impeller bearings, with the impeller spinning at as much as 100,00 RPM. We replaced MANY turbochargers that could have been saved if the drivers had let the car idle for about 30 seconds or so before shutting the engine off so the impeller could spool down.

And if a 14-71 on the street isn't enough fer ya, how 'bout sumpin from a locomotive? (Yes, it's real.)

This weird-engined Chevrolet Camaro : r/WeirdWheels

I caught an interview on YouTube with the owner of that, they blipped the throttle ONE TIME and lifted both heads. Same car put it on the back bumper, and then the roof if I'm remembering right.
