Wide-Bodied Toyota MR2

Time to take a brake from KS models. I'm ready to build my green wide-bodied Toyota MR2! This baby is going to be painted Boyd's Chezoome Teal Pearl, with a two-tone interior. Either black/green, or two tone green with some black.

The interior greens will be Tamiya XZ-11 JN Green, and Tamiya FX-71 Cockpit green.

Fortunetly, this kit does NOT require any body cutting, and no resin added-on later kit's that dont' fit.

This should be a pretty simple straight forward build with time taking to ensure perfection on the body kit and paint work.

Test-fitting the side's. Maybe some filler and sanding are required to perfect it, but still a very nice fit.

One question I'd like to know is why didn't Fujimi finish the gas-door on the new fender? It look's like you've got no access to fill'er up with! How can I finish the gas-door on the fender? Any suggestions?

Either you have to scribe the lines in the new fender, or better yet just take a bit of superglue and fill the fuel filler and pretend it's not there. It's not like anyone's going to know but us... and then you could find an aftermarket racing style fuel filler and drill a hole somewhere appropriate for that, if you wanted to have a fuel filler somewhere. I'd take the easy route and fill the door that's on the car.

Good idea, I can use the gap-filling CA glue and fill it in. I can "pretend" that the gas doore is hidden behind something. All though, I do like the thought of making a round "motorcycle" style gas-cap which is very popular to do on real cars.

Do I dare put KS logo's on the car?

Koenig never did any Japanese cars as far as I know, but if they did, it would probably look like this MR2. The only cars that I know of that KS touched, are Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar. Only problem with the Jaguar is they made an ugly car even uglier. I've never liked Jaguars and KS made it worse I think. In my opinion, the Jaguar is the only car Koenig shouldn't have messed with. But I guess in the 80's and early 90's it was popular enough that they went with it.

This MR2 will go with the other Japanese cars, and NOT with the Koenig klan.

i gotta tell you, im not sure if i dig this body, it look to me like they are trying very hard to make it look lile a 3000GT

but then again, that was a very popular body style back in the days and ive even seen bodykits for GSIs that look like that (on the rocker panels)

I dont' think an MR2 no matter how hopped up and decked out will ever be anywhere near the value of a KS car. I was joking when I suggested KS logo's on it since it has similar wide-bodied style kit on it.

I was going to get that same Supra too! That's why I love Fujimi's older kit's from the 80's and early 90's. They had alot of sweet wide-bodied style cars. They have a first generation MR2 I'd like to get as well. If you've ever looked at an old Fujimi catalouge, you can see alot of very cool "tuned" cars including the very, very, very rare Mugen CRX Pro.2. I'm still acheing for that one!

At least this wide body kit fit's much better than their Veilside "resin" body kit. I'm also very releived I dont' have to cut anything off.

I plan on glueing the body together, triming her up, maybe filler if needed then primer this weekend.

Question, for my choice of color, the metallic green, should I use a white primer, or gray primer? I'm thinking white as I dont' want the paint to look darker than it should be.

Then what color do you suggest? I dont' care for orange's and yellow's. And with my Koenig's, I've already got two red's and planning another red soon.

Body kit is mounted. Will have to do some filler, trimming, et'c before primer.

It was a little difficult getting all five peices to line up properly, but it still fit's ton's better than the Veilside kit did. Never mind the gap on the right front fender. That got fixed after photo. At least with dark colors, it hides imperfections.

I'm tempted to cut out the headlights and make my own plexi-glass covered style headlights like on my Testarossa. I'm also thinking of cutting the roof off as in Targa-style. Not convertible, but Targa.

I was almost thinking of black?!

I just picked up a Nissan Skyline & Toyota Supra From Fujimi's "345 tuning" Series. your MR-2 is a re-boxed one from this series. Wide & Wider wheels & fender flares dominate in this series. I Equate them to the IMSA Flares that showed up on nearly everything in the 80's. & since I'm on a wide-body kick right now.......

where can i find those fujimi "345 tuning" series kits at?

Black is okay, but a hard color to get "right". too bad about mounting the body kit already. I have a t-top version of the stock MR-2 that I would have traded bodies w/ for you.

not a Straight Black, but Tamiya Spray in Metallic Black is a good alternative, as seen on this Car:

That look's like a dark gun-metal color more than metallic black! Very nice! I just recently thought of useing Hot Magenta, a color I once used on a Volkswagen Golf. Almost like a Pepto-Bismo pink without being "pink". I'll look at the hobby shop and see if I can find a more "grabby" color for this project.

I was also thining about a particular red that is used on Honda Racing car's. It's a little bit of an orang-red without being Italian Red.

To answer your question Kustom, I was going to get my 345 Tuning on ebay but ran out of funds. Every week just search Fujimi on ebay. And make sure you select "store inventory" search option as well.

I've never had any such issues with ebay. What bothers me are those that list items that they are selling in store as well. While it maybe listed in ebay, it's no longer available? And you dont' find that out till long after you've already paid for the item? That I dont' like!

My favorite seller is Hobby Japan, but I have not bought plastic model kit's from theme. I usually buy my RC car stuff from theme.

Now back to my project. I visited the LHS today and searched and searched through their selection of paints. I saw lot's of bright eye-catching colors, but none suited my taste like the Chezoom Teal Pearl. So, I'm going to go ahead with that and use white primer as a base so that it will be as bright as possible.

I wouldnt' say the Chezoom is a dark green, more like a medium green, a little lighter than say British Racing Green.

Oh yea, I also picked up some reading material. I picked up May/June and Aprils issue of MCM magazine!

I fixed the gaps,

And, I was smart enough to save the clear parts from my spare Competition model. So, if I cut out the headlights, and scratch-build the bucket's, or whatever you call the shelfe? I can use these lenses here.

They look like their very suitable if I just rotate theme 90 degrees!

Possible a plexi-glass engine cover for the MR2?

Oh, except it would have to have an engine in which it doesn't.

I've used to collect, build, and race Kyosho's 1/28 scale Mini-Z cars.

I dont' race RC cars anymore as they started getting too expensive buying hop-up's and what nots.

I'm enjoying building kit's more instead.

oh i have a 1/8 nitro powered buggy. it will almost get 50 mph. i know what you mean about it getting expensive. i think it was $599 when i bought it and that was almost 9 years ago !!! also the nitro-methane u buy is just about $30 a gallon !!!

Well, I thought I'd cheet by stealing the finished chassis off the Veilside project. However, it didn't work out as well as I had hoped. Apearently the left rear wheel is for some reason at an odd caster, meaning it is further forward against the fender than it should be.

Right side look's perfect,

Bottom almost reminds me of my KS 928!

Unfortunetly, in trying to mount the body onto the chassis, I broke off the front bumper.

According to the instructions, they want you to mount the body kit parts AFTER putting the body on the chassis? How is that possible? You need to do all the body work, mounting, trimming, filling, prepping, painting, et'c, BEFORE mounting it to the chassis!

By the way, the steering is poisable so it's working just fine. No mis-alignment there.

Is it normal for body kit's like this to have this open space between the stock body, and the kit?

Or should I fill it in with plastic? However, I think most of it will be covered by the wheel anyway as seen here

Fill it? Really? Hmmmm, a bit more work than what I wanted to do, but I did ask the question!

All right, you guy's want an outrageous color for this, so Tuesday when I have more funds, I'll go to the LHS and pick up Hot Magenta. I'll detail the interior black and "pink".

Does semi-gloss black come in spray? I want semi-gloss to simulate shiny leather.

I think I'll also CF the front hood and the center section of the rear wing.

I know these are mid-engine cars and it's usually the engine cover that's replaced with a CF one, but I've also seen these MR2's with CF front's as well and it'll help brake up the bright color.

I looks to me that the body kit is actually just a wee off. The chassis is fine.

Test fit the one for the kit.

It is a good looking body kit tho.

Maybe just some thin plastic sheet will fill the void

but it would make it harder to get paint back there.
