Good morning all hope everyone is well. Purchased yesterday @ Hobby Lobby. I've always have a certain affection towards the early years of the Dodge Demon. Yeah, yeah I know the Plymouth Duster is more prevalent, and popular. However I always liked the "little brother" feel the Demon (and later on the Dart Sport) had. To be honest I still wish that I had saved my pennies back in the 1980's and got an actual 1:1 Demon. All that being long windedly said, here is one that's going into my stash for a later build. From what I've read on online this MPC 1971 Demon builds into quite a nice model. Now in watching Chris' HPI Guys build video the only major issue that he noted was that the kit stripes are too glossy (should be a matte finish) and they're a bit on the thick side. So that will be impasse one for me. Secondly unsure if I'm going with, a street or drag version. If I go street everything is there so I don't have to really go aftermarket on anything. If I choose the 1/4 miler route then I have to think about it a bit. So the questions become:

  • Is the kit engine suitable, or do I have to source more of a drag 340? If I need to buy one where would I look for it?
  • Are the rear slicks useful or do I source lets say off of Ted's Modeling Marketplace?
  • The Six Pack hood I can get from Harts Parts resin for $7.00 so no problem there I believe.
  • Need pro stock decals which I think I can get from Slixx, unless anyone has other suggestions?

The color will either be Tamiya TS52, Tamiya Blue (shade undecided), or one of the Testors One Coat Blue Lacquer's I have in my paint stash. Also if any of you have built this kit I'd certainly appreciate pictures of your finished products. The Pink paint is going towards an AMT/ERTL 1970 Dodge Challenger I have in my stash. As always I really appreciate the help. Have a great day.

Can’t go wrong with a blue Demon. The engine is a bit undersized and a good replacement can be found in the AMT 71 Duster.

Thanks for replying. I have an old AMT 1971 Duster issue. I can pull the engine from. If I do so do I need to make modifications to it? Also where did you get the Six Pack hood?

Not sure on the modifications needed as I built mine mostly box stock after a lengthy paint debacle (don’t ask lol)

The hood I made using the scoop from the Revell 68 Charger kit.

For a 1/4 miler how about Don Carlton's Pro Stock Demon. Slixx has the decals.

Perhaps. I was also thinking about doing a local bracket racer complete with some of the Gofer decals local business sheet.

Canucks 3D has a nice replacement grill to replace the crappy one in the kit if you want to go that route.

I haven't finished any one-of-the-four which I'd purchased (the first attempt was disappointing - 97% attributable to me) .

The decals are a big disappointment. They look nice, but are too thick and too glossy (not sure what Round2 was thinking with those bummer decals...)

Insofar as the grille ; here's another aftermarket source for upgraded grilles (yes, plural : he offers the 1972 grille, too !) Dodge Demon 1971 1972 3D Printed Grille for 1:25 MPC Model Kit | eBay
