I am going to be building a 49 coupe soon but do not want the stock engine or the Caddy but want to use a hopped up flathead,if my memory is correct the 50 convertible had the speed equipment and do all the versions have those parts.

All of the '50 convertible kits have those parts: finned cylinder heads and dual carb intake.  The '49 and '50 kits were developed in tandem and released at the same time in 1962.  They share no actual tooling but many parts are similar.  The engine blocks fall into that category.  Ertl later altered the '49 coupe engine to eliminate the axle hole in the block, so that is preferable to the '50 which still has the axle hole.

I will still need the axle hole as the 49 kit I am using is from the 60s or just grab the speed parts and put them on the 49 block.  Looks like I will have to grab a complete kit as I did not see just a engine on eBay.

You could glue pins of the appropriate diameter in the spindles/ suspension to replace the metal axle.  Use styrene rod, wire, or cut the kit axles. Use the appropriate glue. If you cut the kit axle or hardened wire wear eye protection and make sure you use cutter specifically for hardened wire.

Not all versions of the AMT '49 Mercury have flathead speed parts. I have several of them with just a stock flathead or the 413 cross ram Dodge (I know it's a MOPAR anyway) as the only options.

The Round 2 issues of the '50 Ford convertible include a straight axle setup that will fit the '49 frame, and eliminate the need for an axle hole in the engine block.

I am going to buy a 50 convertible kit to.get the engine,I have no problem with using the metal.axle since that is the way the kit was designed, the 49 is going to be built as a shine hauler before the OHV engines.  I will then have a 50 to build.and will build it stock using some parts from the 49.

The optional Flathead hop-up parts and lowered rear suspension were added to the kit in the early/mid nineties (the “greyscale” boxes) and have been included in all subsequent reissues.
