My goal for my current project is to have the paint finish to match a 60's/70's high impact color..(in this instance 'Top Banana'), but with a with a deep, rich metallic/pearl/ candy finish. For lack of a better example, remember the Testors MM Aluma Yellow Pearl?

That color, but as a color matching basecoat under a candy yellow 2k clear.

What would be the ideal method to achieve such a finish as that?  I was told that a pearl over a solid, could potentially make the yellow appear much more pale if too much is applied.

Your thoughts?

Don't know about lighter colors, but shot what I thought was a light coat of copper pearl flames over candy apple red and they looked like burnt orange.

The pearl over yellow. What you are describing is probably not the yellow becoming paler, but a number of pearl coats over it will appear to fade the yellow the more costs you put on. It will effectively be working like a diffuser.

the base coat will change the colour. these are both hok brandywine pearl but the bonneville is over flourescent pink, while the bug is over a bright metallic gold. the bug has a much deeper look to it. these are both 3 coats of the pearl and 2 of duplicolour clear
