Evan_N Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Currently working on the Revell '76 Gran Torino. As a kid growing up in the 70's I have a real soft spot for cars from this time, especially typical daily rides that I would have seen in my neighbourhood back then. First car kit I've built in more than 40+ years, and it's going together nicely. I don't know if this is considered a "good" kit, but I'm really enjoying so far. I've got the engine and chassis built and just finishing up painting before installing them.I ended up mixing up some blue for the engine, as I couldn't really find anything at my hobbyshop. I know Testors makes (made?) a Ford engine blue, but they didn't have any stock. I tried to match it with pictures I got on line. I think I got pretty close. I left it a bit brighter, because I want to do some oil washes and weathering. 9
TopherMcGinnis Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Cool kit. They must've built a blue million Torinos. They was everywhere! The engine color looks great. What color are you painting the car? 1

What color are you painting the car? I'm going to go with Metallic Silver, and a blue interior. Apparently that was one of the dealer options back then. I just need to figure out how I'm going to paint the vinyl. That interior blue looks a bit challenging... 1
Evan_N Posted September 30 Author Posted September 30 Made some more progress yesterday. The engine is painted and installed. I just need to pop in the rad hose, air cleaner, and do some spark plug wiring. Unfortunately a lot of the other "plumbing" is missing from the engine compartment. I'm not sure I want to tackle that on this build. I don't want to get bogged down now that I'm making pretty good progress. I used AK Streaking grime to get the dirt on the engine block, along with some pigments for the dust. I used a bit of rust enamel on the headers, but I think that they're a bit too silvery still. I might hit them with some brown to tone them down. 8
Evan_N Posted September 30 Author Posted September 30 Hey All, For the interior I'm going to with Apple Barrel 21484 Admiral Blue. I think this will give me a good base to start with. I'm also ready to spray the body colour. I'm going with Metallic Silver. To me the actual Ford colour looks to be more grey than bright silver. I found a substitute for 1G, Ford's Code, that looks right, but I'm not sure whether to go with a black primer, or a grey one? Any suggestions, or advice would be welcomed.
FoMoCo66 Posted October 1 Posted October 1 This thing is looking good, that engine color is almost spot on my friend. Also that weathering is amazing! 1
DoctorLarry Posted October 2 Posted October 2 For a silver top coat I would use grey primer. You will get better color coverage. 1
stavanzer Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I agree on the Grey Primer. Your engine detailing skills are great. 1
Evan_N Posted October 2 Author Posted October 2 Thanks guys! I appreciate the encouragement, and advice. Chassis is assembled, the seats and interior has been painted, and I intend to prime the body later on today. I'll post some more pictures this evening. 1
Evan_N Posted October 2 Author Posted October 2 Making some more progress. I've sprayed the interior colour. The vinyl looks too flat and a bit too purple to me, so I'm going to give it a spray of Tamiya X-23 which should bring up the gloss, and enhance the blue. I'm basing my interior colour on these references that I found online. I've also done some work on the chassis. everything is installed underneath, and I can start to do some initial weathering 8
TopherMcGinnis Posted October 3 Posted October 3 Color looks spot on to me. I can hear myself sitting on the seat. 2

Or remembering back that one time during summer after 5th grade, when you were wearing shorts, and how it felt like you literally just sat on the surface of the sun. No lies!! And this is looking awesome! You captured the typical .. wet spots on the block perfectly! 1

My dad's 69 Chevelle had black vinyl seats. I know exactly what you mean. 😂 And in the winter those seats were like ice blocks until the car warmed up. 1
slusher Posted October 8 Posted October 8 my neighbor in Chicago had a light blue 76 Torino witness medium interior, beautiful car! 1

Evan_N Posted Monday at 01:12 AM Author Posted Monday at 01:12 AM Made some progress this weekend. It"s Thanksgiving up here, so lots of spare time to work on the car. Learning lots of new things on this build. Plenty of mistakes, but still making progress. The chassis is done and weathered. Used a combination of paints and pigments. I varied the rust on the exhausts as if maybe one side had a new one put in. I'm not sure if the gas tank colour is correct. When I did my Google search I got back that they could be steel or painted black. I might do some stains around the oil pan drain plug. I'm still debating whether or not to do some wiring. I might wait on this and get a few more builds under my belt first. I'm happy with how the seats came out. Not sure if I'm going to "weather" them... Dash board and door panels are ready to be assembled. My first attempt at BMF. Pretty good learning curve, but I know what I did wrong - need to keep a sharp blade! I messed up the dash decals, but I'm not sure how visible they will be once everything is in place. I'm really happy with the body colour. Not the best photos, the colour came out just how I was hoping. I'm going to let it sit for a couple of days before I hit it with the 4000 grit. I might do another coat after sanding. There's a bit of orange peel on the driver's side rear and the hood will need another blast for sure. Funny thing is, even though the paint looks rough in the pictures, it's actually really smooth in person. only a couple of bumps. 2
Kanada Kustoms Posted Monday at 01:16 AM Posted Monday at 01:16 AM Great job on the weathering of the chassis and engine! 1
